Many Norwegian bands have grown up around factories, but Norwegian factories are often located in the countrysides - by a fjord or lake, by a river or waterfall that provided power for the factory. The factory was the foundation for the existence of the community, but it was also essential for the community's cultural life, choirs, bands etc. (cp. British brass bands and mining). "Celebration for band" tries to give a picture of the environment and life around a band like this, with both factory noise and the natural world (Pastorale), as well as the challenges and development of the band itself. The composition is built up of five connected episodes: - Fanfare and Prologue (concludes with a feeling of the untamed power of the river) - Pastorale I: " At the river" - Intermezzo: " The Factory" (starts with the opening of water for the turbines: snare drum. Factory whistle and bell call to work, and the spinning and weaving machinery starts up.) - Pastorale II: " Summer evening on the fjord." - Finale: " Challenge and Progress"

"Candles in Advent" is a beautiful melody with great lyrics. It was originally written for an Norwegian Advent TV-series in 1985.In this arrangement, the oboe has some solo passages (cue notes in flute). I Have tried to vary the instrumentation without going beyond the beautiful Christmas mood.The harmonization is simple and functional. Let the soloists "speak" with good phrasing and focus also on harmony in the unison melody lines. Good balance and intonation in the accompaniment can make the performance a little gem on the Christmas concert.- Reid Gilje -

Songs from Gershwin - George Gershwin
This medley, arranged by Gazzani to mark the 70th anniversary of Gershwin's death, includes five of the composer's best-loved songs: A Foggy Day, Oh, Lady be good, The man I love, But not for me and Strike up the band. A contemporary (and, some would say, rival) of Johann Strauss I in 19th-century Vienna, Joseph Lanner was, for a time, more popular and widely performed than his associate. After a much-publicized separation of the two musical giants, Lanner was appointed to the coveted post of Musik-Direktor of the Redoutensale in the Habsburg Imperial Palace. Lanners ballet was written in September of 1841; this superb Bourgeois edition brings the work to the wind ensemble repertoire. It is an outstanding example of the Austrian march genre.
