The traditional Mexican 'mariachi' music is a festive and exuberant type of music that puts you in a good mood. One of those traditional themes is La Bamba which has been sung and recorded by several singers, such as Trini Lopez, and consequently became very famous. In the sixties and seventies you could hardly imagine a party or ball without this endlessly repeated 'Bamba', a round dance with opportunity to kiss the ladies.

£186.20Wald Sinfonie - Kees Vlak
It was during his stay at Freiburg, Germany, where he was attending a Music Festival, that Kees Vlak found his inspiration for this romantic work. At this festival he was awarded a prize for one of his compostitions, which was played by several bands from different countries. The composer was staying in the small village of Horben, hidden among pine woods on a mountain at the border of the Black Forest. From the balcony of his room he had a splendid view on the Schawinsland Valley, scarcely hidden by the tops of the huge pines. Each morning a blackbird singin in a huge pine next to his window woke him up. This bird song opens the composition.Whenever possible the composer and his wife went for a walk in the Black Rorest. The rediscovery of this wonderful area is expressed by the steadily increasing number of tone colours, used in the orchestration. Each village still boasts its own folk music and dances. More than one hundred bands were playing all around; the Black Forest seemed to be the scene of one huge festival. The image of the Black Forest is also linked to that of hunting scenes, so the next theme is being introduced by hunting horn themes. The second theme paints the lake "Titisee". At first the lake is very calm, but a stiff breeze sets both water and music alike in motion. The small town of Titisee is very popular with tourists and is famous for its woodcutting, its clockworks and musical boxes. It is a popular folk tune, played by a musical box that makes the link with the next theme. The joy and cheerfulness of the dancing village people is expressed by a movement which works out the initial theme.On leaving the little town, one can hear once more the hunting music from the wood as well as the song of the birds. The new theme is againg closely linke d to the hunt and played by the typical German helicon-like euphoniums.this theme interacts with the wecond theme and the word ends with a grnd finale meant as a musical hommage tot this wonderful area.

£140.80Italienische Lustspiel Ouverture - Ted Huggens
This work was composed in the style of an Italian opera overture. The first part has a quick tempo and flashing dynamics, and contains some virtuoso passages. It has clearly been inspired by Rossini's music. The slow second movement is based on the popular Italian folksong 'Santa Lucia'. It looks like a serenade with trumpet and alto saxophone solos. The themes of the first movement come back in the fast final movement with a virtuoso part for the bass instruments. The composer adds now and then some motorial rhythm.

£140.80Cinquantieme - Serge Lancen
Cinquantieme, the fiftieth composition for symphonic band by Serge Lancen, was composed in the fall of 1993. It is written in an overture form and built on four distinct themes. First there is a merry and dynamic March, followed by a Waltz of the same character; then comes a small melody and finally the March turns up again, but this time it ends with a triumphant theme. The overture is dedicated to Alain Thiery and his Symphonic Band of Pont-Ste-Marie/La-vau/Creney. It was premiered during the gala concert closing the 120th anniversary celebrations of that band. The number in the title 'Cinquantieme' (Fiftieth), indicates the richness of Lancen's wind band repertoire. Fascinated by the symphonic band's extremely rich range of tone colours, Lancen has devoted all his talent and passion to it. For this type of orchestra he has written symphonies, rhapsodies, several concertos and even religious compositions with choirs and soloists.

£116.40Waters Deep and Wide - Eric Wetherell
England boasts an enormous treasure of folksongs, many of those being preserved and listed thanks to the efforts of Cecil Sharp (1859-1924). The composers Ralph Vaughan-Williams and Percy Grainger were very keen on those folksongs and used many of them in several of their wind band compositions. Eric Wheterell resumed this idea. His composition is based on the Somerset folksong 'Waly, Waly' which provides the main theme. Two countermelodies build the two other themes.

£140.80Belvedere Suite - Wilhelm Koenen
Part One: 'Danse mditerranenne'This part is composed of stylized folkmusic elements from several regions of Mediterra-nean countries. If this music recalls memories of your holidays on the sunny beaches, the composer will have reached his goal.Part Two: 'Impression'This part is meant as a contrast with the first and the third parts. The conductor should not stick to the metronome tempo, but he can express his own interpretation by means of 'rubato playing'. This 'impression' was inspired by the Provence landscape.Part Three: 'Marche grotesque'We deliberately used non-typical characteristics of the traditional march. The underlying idea is: A band starts playing a march at the ordinary marching tempo. There is already a mistake at measure 4 when some musicians play the wrong bar which causes the fifers to start too early with the drum and fife signals. A grumpy 'Stop' brings and end to the false start by means of a pathetic quaver (eighth note). The drummers however continue to play their drum beats, so the fifers start again and play very quickly in order to catch up with the drummers. They even manage to do so, thanks to that late quaver (eighth note). The band now also starts to play again and reacts to this chaos by laughter. The march that comes next does not match the metric characteristics of the usual march. The woodwinds, dreaming of holidays, get caught in a Tarantella. A compelling signal by the trumpets and the horns, soon joined by all band registers, leads the band back to reality. We deliberately chose well-known 'secondary parts' in order to make the audience accept the 'out-of-tune playing'. Original themes would not have had the same effect. The whole composition is just one great musical joke. If the audiance chuckles the composer will have achieved his aim. The third part is extremely well suited to end a concert or to be used as encore.

This concerto is in the first place intended for the beginning fluteplayer who is already somewhat familiar with the elementary qualities of a soloist.The first part is written in the tradition of the well-known 'airs' by Ted Huggens. A very expressive choral tune dialogues with the complete band. The merry second part 'Rondo' is harmonically and melodically based on classical principles. From time to time the composer drops these principles to give way to themes that are related to entertainment music.

£116.40Anacreon Ouverture - Luigi Cherubini
Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842) was one of the leading figures in the musical world of the early nineteenth century, being active as well in Paris, London and Vienna as in his home country Italy. He became the first inspector of the Paris Conservatory of Music where he taught composition from 1816 onwards and was director from 1821 to 1841. Besides his famous 'Requiem in C minor' he wrote some thirty operas, fallen into oblivion except for the overtures, and also several marches for wind band. 'Anacreon' is a ballet-opera in one act written and first performed in 1803. The composition is rather representative for Cherubini's style and boasts several pleasant melodies fitting in a distinct structure. The overture is written in a simple classical style. The introducing largo leads to the central allegro and then the themes are developed in a fascinating way.
