The Pre-Goodman Rag - Malcolm Arnold
Malcolm Arnold's Clarinet Concerto No. 2, Op. 115, was dedicated to Benny Goodman, and first performed by him as part of the Red Rocks Music Festival with the Denver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Priestman on 17 August 1974. The third movement, known affectionately as 'The Pre-Goodman Rag', is an outrageous ragtime parody with a hauntingly wistful middle section. The work has now been made more widely available in this transcription for wind band.

A Walk in the Park for Walter was composed for Avenllaneda's John F. Kennedy High School Band. This composition features dynamic brass, sustained chords, sweeping & energetic woodwind lines, and a recurring 3-note motif, in addition the the intuitive musical phrasing for which Strommen is known. The vibrant fast sections are contrasted by a waltz in the middle of the piece, which is then followed by a wonderfully bold ending.

The Gauntletis a piece written to sound bold and exciting while also being accessible to young performers with a limited range. Simple yet bold rhythms add excitement, heightened by the fact that every section has an opportunity to play melodic content. Josef Franz Wagner (1856-1908) was a military bandmaster and composer known as the "Austrian March King." He wrote "Under the Double Eagle," his most popular and enduring composition, in 1902 It later became the official march of the 1st Austrian Artillery Regiment Number 2. The title refers to the double eagle in the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian double monarchy. America's own "March King," John Philip Sousa, liked the piece enough to record it three times with his own band.

The inspiration for the work is the world-famous Royal Eise Eisinga Planetarium in the orchestra's home town of Franeker in the Netherlands. In this continuous seven-movement work, the composer pictures the sun as well as the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
