On 11 March 1879 in the Austrian town of Neumarkt am Wallersee a huge fire broke out in a brewery, setting fire to at least 60 other houses within one hour. Due to poor equipment and a lack of water, nearly the entire city was burned to the ground.Only the church was spared. This epic piece musically depicts the events in a programmatic way starting from the inauspicious moments shortly before the disaster, throughout the fire, and the final reconstruction of the town with the help of thestrong spirit and unity of the Salzburg community. Cerebral Vortex was composed for Musikkforeningen Nidarholm for their participation in the 2009 World Music Contest in Kerkrade, The Netherlands. Tthe first performance was given at this contest conducted by Espen Andersen, with the composer in thesaxophone section.The title is meant to describe a from of writer's block caused not by lack of ideas, but rather a lack of ability to channel and form the madness swirling around inside the head of someone with a great desire to express something. In this respect,the piece can be said to be an exercise in keeping focus from the composer's side. A limited amount of material is repeated and treated to create a development that always has a solid anchor point. This is emphasized by the return to the openingtheme towards the end.

Delmar Festival Overture is a powerful concert overture utilizing many of the contemporary compositional techniques that distinguish John O'Reilly's work. From the opening brass fanfare to the exciting conclusion, syncopated rhythms and numerous, interesting shifts of meter abound. Biting polychords establish the predominant harmonic structure for the opening Allegro, but the majestic theme that follows in the horns and saxes takes on a decidedly British band style. The lyrical middle section begins with a fully scored chorale, which serves as the subject for a lovely melodic development featuring woodwinds and French horn. A brilliant brass fanfare ushers in a return tothe opening section, which is now reorganized and further developed to bring this exciting overture to its dramatic conclusion.
