£139.99A Man's Destiny - Jan de Haan
A Man's Destiny has the Frisian line 'Yn Ieren en Sinen' ('with much conviction') as its subtitle. The work was commissioned by CMV Harmonie Sneek (based in Friesland, The Netherlands) to acknowledge their 95th anniversary. The composer based this work on the life of a former member of the band, who played flugelhorn in the ensemble until the age of 86. Their favourite piece of music, 'Canon' by Thomas Tallis, provided a great deal of musical inspiration for this characteristic and versatile work.

Right from the outset until the very end, the speed, energy and "drive" of the tuneful music is palpable. It's abundantly clear why the title "Seatbelts Fastened!" was chosen: just like an airplane, this music takes off and neither tempo nor intensity are lost throughout the flight. Descending and ascending scales characterise the most important thematic material and the music explores a variety of different registers through Van der Roost utilising a great deal of different tonalities and metres. In Charge was commissioned by the Home Guard Band of Eksj to honour Thomas Samuelsson, whose efforts with the orchestra have been of great significance. He was a driving person within Swedish military music and furthermore project manager for Eksj International Tattoo. Thomas worked at Eksj Energy and the title of this work hints both to his occupation and his administrative leadership in the band. The first part of this concert march concentrates a lot on syncopation, while the second part is more robust with a traditional and lyrical trio part. In Charge was premiered by the Home Guard Band of Eksj on the 22th of December 2018, conducted by Maria Sandberg.

Gemini Concerto was commissioned by and written for Ryukoku University (Japan), Andr Henry and Shoichiro Hokazono. Set in three movements, the concerto aims to explore the close relationship, as solo instruments, between the trumpet and euphonium, exploiting the many common factors between the two as well as the subtly different characteristics they possess in terms of both lyrical and rhythmic playing. The first movement is a bustling toccata and the second movement is lyrical and improvisatory in nature. A fantastic piece and a great addition to the repertoire!

"The years leading to the US Bicentennial (1976) saw a great flowering of artistic celebration, including the commissioning of American composers to write festive works for the occasion. The Nashville Symphony and its conductor Thor Johnson asked Adolphus Hailstork for such a work to premiere, and to distribute the music at no cost to high school orchestras around the United States. The present version for band followed as a natural offshoot of the infectiously exhilarating 3-minute work. This colourful work consists of three movements: 'The 7th Tribe', 'Eternal Fidelty' and 'Conquest of the Homeland'.
