Commissioned and premiered in 1987 by the U.S. Army Field Band, this was Claude T. Smiths last completed work, written to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. Based on the hymn tune Resignation (How Firm a Foundation), this is a mature work by the celebrated American bandmaster, displaying the technical capabilities of each section of the wind band. A bold concert statement and a fitting commentary on the founding fathers whose faith and determination launched the great American Experiment.

The opening represents standing upon the steps of the castle and being in awe of its size and majesty. The next section represents a dungeon-like corridor, dark, dank and musty, followed by a secret passage. Finally, there appears a long dark corridor that ultimately ends in the Great Hall and then a race to get out of the narrow corridor and outside to safety.

At the time this march was written, Sousa was living in Philadelphia and had not yet begun his Marine Band career - but he was an accomplished composer who already had 34 publications to his credit. Spirit of Olympus was commissioned by director Elaine Wersky and the Olympus Music Program on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Olympus Junior High School. It was asked that the celebratory work also also provide a middle section that could serve the school as an alma mater for the school. The true spirit of the student body is reflected in the great opening fanfare in the high brass with strong support from the percussion section. The alma mater is first presented by the full woodwind choir supported with glistening metallic percussion as accompaniment. A lush, full band treatment follows, emphasizing the majestic import of the meaningful melody. An energetic finale brings the work to a fittingly proud and regal close.
