The Wind Rises - Joe Hisaishi

This beautiful, lyrical melody is so colorful in the film, without having an imposing image. "The Wind Rises" (2013) does not dominate the visual, and perhaps is an ideal form of film music considering this is director Miyazaki's final production. Chamber ensembles with solos and strings are frequently used in the soundtrack, so the sound is mellow and soft. As you listen more and more, you still recognize the tradition of Ghibli music. When I arrange, I try not to visualize the image of a film. I may think of characters and story line but is it important to write music that alone is appealing and fascinating. Trying not to "overstate" the film is not needed here. If you can bring out the most appealing parts of the soundtrack, excess can be forgiven. Of course, I have not changed the musical elements of the original.I asked Mr. Tomoki Ubata (band director at Ina Gakuen Sr. High School) whom I have worked with numerous times to assist with layout. He came up with a heartwarming medley with two main parts; leading boy Jiro's gift for aeronautical design and his romance with the heroine, Natsuko. The following themes are contained in the arrangement:1. Nahoko (A Rainbow) Beginning2. Caproni (An Aeronautical Designer's Dream) C3. A Journey (An Encounter at Karuizawa) H4. The Falcon I5. Prototype 8 N6. A Journey (A Parting) & A Journey (A Dream of Flight) PIt is quite remarkable, looking back on 30 years of Studio Ghibli's achievements.(Kazuhiro Morita)

Valley of the Pinios - Kevin Houben

Lying on high, calcareous sandstone rocks are the monumental monasteries of Meteora, a region in northcentral Greece which look down over the valley of the Pinios River. This region inspired Kevin Houben to compose Valley of the Pinios. You can almost hear the wind swirl around the chalk rocks. The sacred atmosphere of the monasteries, the prayers, the solitude, the grandness of the valley and the splendour of nature are all reflected in this inspirational composition.

Fanfare for the Champions - Otto M. Schwarz

Fanfare for the Champions was commissioned by the municipal concert band of Landeck under the direction of Helmut Schmid on the occasion of the 375th anniversary of the band. The orchestra, which premiered Nostradamus (a key work of the composer), and which also commissioned Mantua - Freedom of the Eagle, has forged a friendship with the composer over a period of many years. This orchestra has participated in the major European competitions and has always performed with distinction--thus the title of the work Fanfare for the Champions. The fanfare, which is written in a style typical for the composer, should convey a feeling ofhappiness: the feeling to have created or accomplished something special. Don't resist that feeling!

In the Center Ring - Robert Sheldon

In The Center Ring was written in the autumn of 2003 for the Upper Antioch Grade School Band from Antioch, Illinois, Earl Bush, director. The piece is a musical snapshot of a circus performance, from the madcap antics of the jugglers and clowns to the elegance of the high-wire and trapeze performers. This wild musical romp is certainly a technical challenge, but is also great fun for the performer and listener alike. Above all, remember this is a theatrical piece - so emphasize the dynamics, bring out the inherent comedy and have FUN! (4:50) This title is available in SmartMusic.

Santa's Journey (Bringing "Joy to the World") - Roy W. Kaighin

As Santa starts his journey, bringing "Joy to the World" by delivering presents to children and adults, he sets off on his majestic sleigh driven by his reindeer. A few elves have snuck into the sleigh to help. With a whoosh, he flies across the sky and over the snowy mountains. The music is in continuous motion, just like Santa's sleigh, as he has many presents to deliver before morning. The quiet moments in the music depict Santa's arrival in small villages, away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, touching the hearts of people everywhere. During his journey, Santa discovers the elves who have apparently lost some of the presents. Santa offers a gentle reprimandbefore the presents are eventually found by Elfie, the youngest Elf. After all the presents have been delivered, Santa heads back home as he calls out, "I'll be back next Christmas!" (4:15)

    The Venetian Collection

The Venetian Collection by Johan de Meij consists of four movements which are all a musical reflection of the four paintings of the same names from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice.Voice of Space is the first movement of The Venetian Collection. The picture on which the music is based on was painted by the Belgian surrealist artist Ren Magritte. Along with Ensor, Permeke and Delvaux he was one of the most important painters of the 20th century. The Red Tower was inspired by the painting of the same name (La Torre Rossa) by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was awarded first prize in the International Composition Contest in Oman. One of the towers of the mediaevalwalls of the Italian town of Soncino (home to the band for whom Johan de Meij wrote the work for) shows a remarkable resemblance to the tower in the work of De Chirico. Magic Garden contrasts starkly with the other movements of the cycle. As with the painting, Johan de Meij has tried to reflect the colourful, naive dream world of Paul Klee. The transparent texture, in which the woods play an important role, makes a striking impression throughout this serene movement.Empire of Light is also based on a work by Ren Magritte. He was a versatile and productive artist producing over 1100 paintings and 700 gouaches. Johan de Meij used the painting Empire of Light as his theme for the last movement of his Venetian Collection.
