Einar Englund (1916-1999) was a major Finnish composer of symphonies, concertos and film music. His first symphony (1946) bears the title "War Symphony", not given by the composer. He preferred to think think of it rather as a euphoric shout of joy at living to survive the hells of war. The first movement Tempo di marcia depicts seemingly never-ending marching through Karelia during the Soviet-Finnish war. Influences from Sibelius and Shostakovich are present.American conductor Robert J. Ambrose's arrangement of Englund's Tempo di Marcia is scored for wind band. The duration is 9 minutes. Nessun Dorma (None shall sleep) is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot, and is one of the best-known tenor arias in all of opera. It achieved pop status after Luciano Pavarotti's 1972 recording of it was used as the theme song of BBC television's coverage of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy and became the famous Tenor's signature aria. This unique arrangement for symphonic band by James Barnes faithfully captures the beauty and richness of Puccini's original orchestral scoring.

£122.50Mercury Rising - Philip Sparke
Mercury Rising was commissioned by sinfonisches blasorchester wehdel and its conductor Thomas Ratzek, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. They premiered this piece in their half-century concert on 2nd November 2018 in the Bremerhaven Stadttheater in Germany. Designed as a virtuosic and lively opener, Mercury Rising opens with nervous energy and driving, syncopated rhythms in a blaze of colour. The horns and saxophones then introduce a broad melody, which the trumpets subsequently take up after a change of tonality. A quieter moment introduces a distant fanfare on muted horns over bubbling semiquavers in the low clarinets. This is interrupted by a passionate tenor melody but soon returns on the full brass section, accompanied by echoes of the opening woodwind figuration, and is extended to bring the piece to a triumphant close.

Fanfare for an Occasion was written to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Anglo Music Press, the publishing company dedicated to the works of British composer, Philip Sparke. It is a bright and festive work in which the main theme starts on the tenor instruments of the band before appearing as canonical imitation by all sections in turn. A short, repeated bridge passage leads to a second theme on the saxes that is taken up by the full band and leads back to a return of the main theme and a repeat of the second subject, which brings the fanfare to a brilliant close.

£99.99March of the Robot Army - Philip Sparke
March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held in Camposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was 'science fiction', so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromatic figures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change of key introduces a legato 'trio' melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting the first two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.
