    The Firebird - Igor Stravinsky

A controversial piece at its premiere performance, The Firebird quickly became standard repertoire for symphony orchestras. The suite contains a thrilling thunderclap in the wonderful conclusion. This arrangement of The Firebird was transcribed for developing bands, introducing young musicians to Stravinsky and this 20th Century musical composition. Goin' Home - Antonin Dvorak

Antonin Dvorak first premiered his "New World Symphony" at Carnegie Hall in December of 1893 with the goal to bring American musical sensibility to European classical music. The second movement, labeled Largo, contained the melody that would later be identified as "Goin' Home." This well-crafted adaptation of that beautiful melody for concert band contains all the elements of the original orchestral version that has moved orchestral concert patrons for over a century. Expert scoring and careful orchestration techniques will ensure success with all ensembles. We think this outstanding arrangement will become a concert band classic for many years to come. Our highest recommendation!

    Slava! - Leonard Bernstein

Composed for Mstislav ("Slava") Rostropovich and the National Symphony Orchestra, this exciting, yet brief overture received it's premiere performance in 1977. Constructed using two contrasting themes that are combined near the end, Slava! is adapted here by Robert Longfield with key and range considerations for school ensembles, but still retaining the energy and authenticity of the original.

    Columbus - Rob Goorhuis

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His father was a wool merchant. Originally he seemed destined to follow in his father's footsteps, and thus sailed the oceans to countries as far apart as Iceland and Guinea. In 1476 his ship was sunk during a battle off the coast of Portugal. Columbus saved his own life by swimming to shore. In 1484 he conceived the idea of sailing to the Indies via a westward sea route, but it was only in 1492 that he was able to realize this plan. On this first voyage he was in command of three ships: the flag-ship, called the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Ni?a. From Spain Columbus sailed via the Canary Islands to the Bahamas, whichhe sighted on October 12th 1492. Without being aware of it Columbus discovered the 'New World' he thought he had landed in the eastern part of Asia. The motif from Dvok's 9th Symphony 'Aus der neuen Welt' forms a little counterfeit history at this point in the composition. After this first voyage Columbus was to undertake another three long voyages to America. These voyages were certainly not entirely devoid of misfortune. More than once he was faced with shipwreck, mutiny and the destruction of settlements he had founded. After Columbus had left for Spain from Rio Belen in 1503, he beached his ships on the coast of Jamaica. The crew were marooned there and it was only after a year that Columbus succeeded in saving his men and sailing back to Spain with them. In the music the misunderstanding about which continent Columbus discovered in his lifetime resounds, for does this part in the composition not contain Asiatic motifs? Poor Columbus! In 1506 the famous explorer died in Valladolid.

    Sevens - Samuel R. Hazo

Best described as a jazz-flavored barnburner for wind symphony, Sam Hazo's exciting work pays homage to the innovative concepts of George Gerswhin and an appreciation for modern day jazz composer Gordon Goodwin. Sevens refers tothe common jazz chord of the 7th as well as number of notes in the phrase, time signatures, etc. Strangely enough, both Gershwin and Goodwin share the same initials (G.G.), have 7 letters in their names, and the letter G is the7th letter of the alphabet! Let it rip. (3:50)

    Cathedral Grove - Robert Buckley

Cathedral Grove is a magnificent park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, containing some of the oldest and largest trees in the world. It is the towering, majestic pillars of these ancient giants and the quietserenity of this place that inspired this music. Evocative and impressionistic in nature, Robert Buckley's writing depicts the richness of the colors and textures, and the diffused light shining through the canopy of leaves above. At times hauntingly lyrical, and other times prayer-like and reverent, but always filled with awe and beauty. (Includes optional part for acoustic guitar or harp). Recorded by the Troy University Symphony Band - MarkWalker, conductor

The finalsection presents a new version of Mr. Curnow's own Olympic Fanfare and Theme for the Olympic Flag which was commissioned for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and performed again in 2000. The dramatic closing is again combinedwith elements of the opening fanfare. Dur: c. 6:40 (Recorded by the University of Akron Symphony Band - Dr. Galen S. Karriker, Director of Bands.
