War and Peace was commissioned 2021 by The Royal Swedish Navy Band and conductor Alexander Hanson to mark the celebration of The Svea Life Guards' 500th anniversary.I. "Fanfares and Battle" opens in a heroic and optimistic nature but changes abruptly as the medieval hymn Dies Irae, Day of Wrath, brakes in. The battle commences. The movement ends with a recap of the opening part.II. "In memoriam" is a funeral march in memory of war victims and suffering people.III. "Peace and Rejoice" pictures soldiers and people celebrating that the war is over. The music reflects an atmosphere of dignity, optimism and joy for life.

The Italian film music composer Piero Umiliani originally composed Mah Na Mah Na in 1968 for the soundtrack of the Swedish movie Sweden - Heaven or Hell. However the piece only became a hit in the 1970s, when Jim Henson used the catchy melody in his children's TV series The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Stefan Schwalgin has produced this excellent version to give baritone saxophonists, who sometimes feel left out by the band's repertoire, a platform for their soloistic development. This gem is full of little musical surprises and will hold a special place in your bands repertoire.

The composers of the musical Chess, Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus, as well as the lyricist Tim Rice had already had a very successful career before they started this huge project. Andersson and Ulvaeus had been the male singers of the popular Swedish group ABBA, whereas Tim Rice had written the lyrics for Lloyd Webber's musicals 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and 'Evita'. The plot of the musical is situated in Merano, a small town in Northern Italy, hosting the Chess World Championships. The protagonists are the American titleholder and his Russian challenger, who are adversaries on both the sports and political level. Nowadays the subject is out of date, as Chess was conceived in 1984 when the political scene was completely different. This might be the reason why this musical did not hold out as long as e. g. 'Les Misrables' or 'Cats'. Anyhow the music remained very popular and songs such as 'Last Night in Bangkok', 'I know him so well' and 'Anthem' belong to the standard repertoire of 'musical classics'. In his 'Chess selection' Johan de Meij used the nice orchestral parts of the soundtrack which gave a kind of symphonic character to this musical.

Talisman tells the story of the "Pierre du Serment", an event that took place in 1639 in the village of Fontenotte, on the border between France and Switzerland. Composed of three brothers and their parents, the Billod family lived peacefully on their farm despite the Thirty Years' War raging around them. When their father was captured by the Swedish mercenaries who plundered the farm, the three brothers vowed to save him, carving their pact in stone according to a Celtic and Viking tradition.Commissioned by the Orchestre d'Harmonie de Montlebon for its centenary, this work pays tribute to a local story that has become a legend.
