The Swedish composer Sam Rydberg (1885-1956) composed all kinds of music, even film music. However he was a military musician for many years and ended his career as a military bandmaster. He remained famous as the composer of about 70 marches. We have already published his famous concert march 'Italia' and now we present 'Under fredsfanan' (Under the Banner of Peace), a lively march composed in 1939.

Thomas Caplin is a Swedish professor of choral conducting. He works at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences in Hamar. He composed this beautiful opus for choir based on the ancient text Ubi caritas.The text is often used during Maundy Thursday, describing Jesus washing the feet of his disciples: Where charity and love are, there God isIn this arrangement, a smaller group of players are soloists. The arrangement will work well if the group can be placed on a gallery or at the back of the concert hall.

Norge i rdt, hvitt og bltt ("Norway in Red, White and Blue") was commissioned by the Oslo Fagott Choir (yes, that is indeed a gay men's choir) for a concert with The Staff Band of the Armed Forces in 2015. I was given artistic licence to write a more modern and somewhat 'eclectic' arrangement for this originally Swedish melody written by Lars-Erik Larsson, which became something of a national liberation anthem when Nazi occupation ended in May 1945 - then with new lyrics by Finn B, Bias Bernhoft and Arild Feldborg.After the premiere in Oslo, and a music video with Oslo Fagott Choir and The Staff Band, broadcasted by Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) on Constitution Day during coronavirus lockdown in 2020, I was approached by many to write an instrumental version of the arrangement for concert band. £149.40Joyful Life - Jerker Johansson
When Jerker Johansson in the 80's started to compose he was for a while obsessed with writing music in odd time signatures, more specifically 7/8. He was asked during the fall of 2020 by Leif Karlsson (former member of the legendary percussion ensemble Kroumata and nowadays conductor) to write something challenging for Uppsala Blsarsymfoniker and this resulted in Joyful Life. The piece is, to say the least, difficult to tap the pulse along to and is something of a baptism of fire for the musicians, regarding rhythmic precision. Joyful Life is dedicated to the always likeable Leif Karlsson (Joyful Leif!) and was premiered on the 15th November 2020 by The Swedish Air Force Band under the baton of the composer.

This version ended up on the Swedish charts for four weeks over the Christmas-New Year 1989-1990 and has been very popular at Christmas concerts since.The lyrics of the song describe Christmas in the Nordic countries.

Wilhelm Peterson-Berger (1867 1942), Swedish composer, beloved most of all for his collections of small piano pieces, Frsblomster 1 3 (Flowers from Frs). Peterson-Berger himself, primarily treasured his five symphonies and five operas, but todayit is mainly his songs and piano pieces which are performed. Besides composing he worked as a music critic at the daily paper Dagens Nyheter, and was feared by many for his sharp, sometimes almost vicious, pen.Peterson-Berger originallycomposed Oriental Dance for piano during his studies in Dresden in 1890, and immediately orchestrated the piece. It is one of his earliest pieces,somewhat of a bagatelle, admittedly, which mighthave found its inspiration in Griegs Peer Gyntsuite, yet it has a na ve charm which well compensates for its weakness. Oriental Dance was first performed by the Knstlerverein in Dresden in February, 1890.

£149.40Minnen frn Holmen - Jerker Johansson
The first theme played by the solo clarinet was written by Jerker Johansson the summer 1997, when he was composing in Swedish folk music style for an intended radio programme in which his father should participate reading poems in local dialect. Unfortunately, the project was discontinued. In the spring 2015 Mr. Johansson however started to work on the theme again, this time adding a song theme of broader character. Holmen is the name of the homestead where Mr. Johansson's father Arne grew up. It is beautifully located in the parish of Skrv, situated east of Skara, one of the oldest towns in Sweden. At Holmen, the composer spent his childhood summers and his recollections are filledwith many bright moments and happy memories. The piece was premiered May 22, 2015 by the Gteborg Wind Orchestra conducted by the composer.
