Miss Saigon is a thrilling musical by the duo Boublil and Schnberg, that is also responsable for Les Miserables. It is a modern version of Madame Butterfly. The plot tells the sentimental story of a G.I. Chris who falls in love with a beautiful native girl Kim during the Vietnam War. When he realizes that she is pregnant he has to go back home in the States where his wife is waiting for him. In order to allow the father to educate the child, the young woman commits suicide. With his usual orchestration skill, Johan de Meij made a fine sympho-nic portrait, containing some of the most beautiful songs of the musical. This is a selection of music used for the Star Trek television serials and movie pictures in the past years. The introduction is based on the main theme which was the tune for the television serial for many years. Then comes the principal theme from the very first Star Trek movie picture and it remains as a kind of thread all through the selection. The next themes 'Ilia's Theme' and 'The Klingon Battle' are extracted from the same film. To complete this Star Trek story we conclude the selection with the main theme of the latest Star Trek film 'Generations'. Of course the title makes an allusion to this as well.

This musical whimsy is based on the well known folk tune Turkey in the Straw. After the introduction we meet our friend as we all know him from the folk tune.At Moderato we catch the turkey in a melancholy mood, as he thinks back to the good old days, spent as a youngster at Old McDonald's Farm, which is next door to the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. But that's another story. Sadness overcomes him at Adagio. The mood passes and next we see him happily dancing a jig. Fate makes an appearance in the shape of the human hand; there is a short chase, and our turkey cries for the last time.After a brief period of mourning, we find that our friend has gone the way of many other turkeys, and has ended up on the Christmas table. A short Coda concludes the piece. Linguistic footnote: The Turkish word for turkey translates as 'Indian bird'.

The musical comedy 'Evita' dates from 1976 and was the third whom composer Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote in collaboration with lyricist Tim Rice. It ran for eight consecutive years in the London West-End and was already acclaimed on Broadway in 1979. 'Evita' tells the lifestory of the passionate second wife of the Argentinian dictator Juan Peron. Eva Duarte was born in Los Todos in 1919. Her life was similar to that of Cinderella. Though from modest origins, she became the most powerful woman in her country as spouse of Juan Domingo Peron who was president of Argentina from 1946 to 1955. She died of cancer on 26 July 1952, only aged thirty-three and was buried as a national heroin. Even after her dead, she was the object of a lay cult with the poorer Argentinian population. Only the army and the aristocracy had always opposed her position next to the president.The story is told by a cynical young man called 'Che'. He envies Evita's success while he cannot sell his invention, a new kind of insecticide. The splendid selection was made and arranged by Marcel Peeters. You hear succesively'Overture', 'On this Night of a Thousand Stars', 'Eva beware of the City', 'Buenos-Aires', 'Goodnight and thank You', 'I'd be surprisingly Good for You', 'Another Suitcase in another Hall', 'Waltz for Eva and Che', and the evergreen 'Don't cry for me Argentina'.

The life of the Austrian empress Elisabeth (1837-1898) which started as a fairy tale but ended as a tragedy, inspired the librettist Michael Kunze and the composer Silvester Levay to write a musical based on the life of the popular 'Sissi'. The musical was premiered in Vienna on 3 September 1992 and was very successful for many years. The story is told by Luigi Lucheni, Elisabeth's murderer. So death, represented by a mysterious and seductive young man, is omnipresent throughout the musical. Several songs have become hits and, of course, you can hear them in this fine selection by Peter Kleine Schaars who gathered various music and dance styles such as the rock shuffle, the jazz waltz and the classical Viennese waltz.

£97.00Syrille - Marc Jeanbourquin
In 2009 Marc Jeanbourquin was a trombonist in the harmony orchestra 'La Gerinia' from Marly (Switzerland). To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the summer music camp of its music school, he was commissioned to write a musical fairy tale for the band. Marc Jeanbourquin was inspired by stories written by his wife Lise Jeanbourquin, and so 'Syrielle the story of a fairy who wanted to catch a star', came into being. The theme of Syrielle is presented in the opening bars as a sequence of two chords, which convey the fairy like feeling of calm and mystery. She lives in a forest and is looking for friends. Then she comes across an ogre who also lives alone. When she sees him, she panics and hurts herself. The ogre takes her and cares for her, and the two end up becoming friends. One by one the themes for the two main characters are stated, and eventually evolve into a festive samba. At the end the theme from Syrielle returns, but this time in a major key, so to make a happy end to this musical fairy tale.

Selkies were creatures, which looked something like grey seals. They were guardians of the sea, and protected the sailors navigating their passages across the ocean. Once a year they would come ashore and transform into people. They would then spend the whole day with the locals, making merry with music, singing and dancing. At sunset they would farewell the villagers, transform back into seals and swim back into the sea. This piece depicts excerpts from this story. The beautiful Irish coast, the arrival of the Selkies, their transformation, merry making, and then their return to the sea. The melodies and orchestration give truly an Irish atmosphere.
