Whispers of the Wind
A very impressive composition for younger bands which is both distinctive and unique! Starts out with a slow and reflective introduction where you can actually hear the sound of the wind whispering before diving into the syncopated rhythms and powerful melodies of the allegro section. Shaffer's compositions like "Fire Dance" , "Tribal Drums" and "Stargazer" have been very popular with bands at this level, and this is very possibly his best ever! Very highly recommended!

Spirit of Independence' was commissioned by the Koninklijke Fanfare 'Onafhankelijkheid' ('Independence') from Wiekevorst (Belgium) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The piece depicts an enthusiastic amateur music club, practicing and making music together in an attentive and companionable atmosphere. The conductor has the good habit of trying to improve the sound of the fanfare by means of practicing chorales and hymns. Jan Van der Roost has used these facts in the dynamic concert piece 'Spirit of Independence': a chorale-like middle section is surrounded by music bubbling full of energy.Duration: 9:15

The Winds Of Power - Nigel Hess
Unlike Nigel Hess's other works for wind band, The Winds of Power is not a programmatic work. After a dark and menacing opening a solo trumpet introduces a theme which will eventually become the centre of a piece and is soon heard tutti in a lyrical form. This is interrupted by a return to the opening mood, with only a brief respite in the form of a chorale for clarinet choir and harp. The theme tries to return once more in a rousing, somewhat cinematic version, but again the sense of foreboding overtakes it. An unsettling march-like section follows before the theme returns in its most lyrical and gentle guise, introduced by solos in the woodwind section. Eventually, a maestoso statement which erupts into a presto coda, ends the journey in a triumphant, more optimistic blaze of sound.
