The music evokes the atmosphere of this very pleasant region, where the gentle way of life is the key to happiness. A lively and joyful passage depicts the cheerfulness of the people of Maasbracht. Maasbracht, like many other towns, suffered during World War II: sound colours darken and pictures of destruction run through our mind. In the midst of despair there is hope, from grief comes new life. The future looks promising. The work leaves Maasbracht, looking forward to the 21st century withconfidence. A highly descriptive work that is suitable for any concert or contest situation.

This work of festive atmosphere was written in 2000 for symphonic band, then the composer arranged it for symphony orchestra. In this piece, Lszl Dubrovay (*1943) parts with his special, hallmark concert band effects; rather, lively vibrations enriched with colliding seconds and distant overtones are brought to the foreground. The special sound is coloured by ornamental trills, appearing even in batches, and vibrating collisions in the high registers. The performance is rendered even more unique by the outer trumpets on both sides of the space. The trumpets and the flugelhorns can be divided into ten parts altogether, thus, the piece can be played by one ensemble or several bands together, as it is usual at the conclusion of large-scale festivals. This composition may be a great choice for festive concerts, since it is a solemn, innovative, and - by virtue of the free arrangement of the performing space - special work at the same time.

Edelweiss Brass Orchestra is a Japanese concert band based in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1978, the ensemble has grown from musical strength to strength and in 2018 they commissioned a new work with Jan Van der Roost for their 40th anniversary concert. The title Hidamari could loosely be translated as "In the Sunshine". A short quote from the famous musical The Sound of Music (you got it, 'Edelweiss'!) is a subtle nod to the name of the commissioning ensemble. Hidamari reflects the idea that EBO is like a home for all musicians: together, they are one big family.
