Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor BWV 852 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bach, Johann Sebastian - Cesarini, Franco

The Passacaglia is a set of instrumental variations based on an ostinato bass. Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C-minor for organ represents the pinnacle of what had been achieved in this compositional form at that time. In Franco Cesarini's arrangement for large wind orchestra, the particularly careful interpretation of the original piece enables him to exploit all the sound colors at his disposal, and in this sumptuous guise Bach's work also takes on a grandiose dimension, albeit tinged with late-Romanticism. The exposition of the beautiful theme begins in the bass part, immediately creating a solemn and serious atmosphere which is accentuated by the intensely pathetic character of the first variations. Up to the tenth variation it remains confined to the bass, but in subsequent ones it also passes to the soprano and alto register. The integrity of the theme is also embellished with elegant arpeggios, in whose lower and higher extensions the theme can be distinguished. Towards the end it returns to the bass in an impressive thickening of the polyphonic texture that swiftly re-establishes the key of C-minor. The "Thema fugatum" which follows immediately does not constitute a Fugue in its own right, rather it is nothing but the twenty-first and most extensive variation of the Passacaglia. This time Bach uses only the first half of the theme, superimposing a rhythmic countersubject that considerably enlivens the entire development of the composition. The polyphonic discourse becomes increasingly dense, until the building tension peaks in a powerful "Neapolitan sixth" chord, followed by a sudden pause. This culminating moment then leads to the coda and final cadence on a bright C-major chord. Duration: 12.45

In Flanders Fields (Vocal or Instrument Solo with Narrator and Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Boysen Jr, Andrew

In Flanders Fields can be performed in two ways: with any wind soloist, narrator and band, or with vocal soloist (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and band. In the first version, the narrator speaks the poignant words of John McCrae's famous poem about the sacrifices of World War I in between phrases from the instrumental soloist. If using a vocalist, the words are sung as lyrics to the instrumental solo melodies. In Flanders Fields is a perfect selection for any patriotic concert.

Ninth Symphony (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barnes, James

Premiered on 21 September, 2018 in Lawrence, Kansas by The University of Kansas Wind Ensemble (Dr. Paul Popiel, conducting), James Barnes' Ninth Symphony was composed between January and late June of that same year. This large work was commissioned by a consortium of twenty-one college bands, community bands, professional bands and individuals to help mark the 70th birthday of the composer (b. 1949). It is an expansive forty-minute work in four movements, of which the composer writes, "This is my last symphony...this work represents a compendium of all that I have learned during the fifty years of composing and scoring for this wonderful new medium: the modern wind band." The first movement, subtitled Elegy, is based around G minor. It is the longest movement of the symphony. Tragic and despondent in character, it is cast in sonata-allegro form. The second movement is entitled Scherzo. Barnes claims that "I have always wanted to write a waltz," and that is how this movement is cast, in a modified rondo form in D minor. In contrast to the mood of the first movement, the scherzo is a delightful posy of expansive melody, splashy color, humor and rhythm. The third movement, which is in a modified tertiary form, is entitled Night Music. In contrast to the scherzo, this movement begins with a mysterious incantation, first displayed by solo Alto Flute. The music becomes even darker and more mysterious, while overall the movement effectively expresses an "otherworldly" mood, ending with a solo soprano offstage which suddenly emerges, eerily singing a modified version of the opening incantation. Cast in sonata-allegro form, the fourth movement is most definitely a rousing Finale, beginning with a brilliant fanfare and undergoing several mood transformations before emerging into the final coda, ending the symphony with an energetic splash of color. And There Were Shepherds (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Bach, Johann Sebastian - Noble & Willcocks

And There Were Shepherds is from The Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach, intended for performance in church during the Christmas season. It was written for the Christmas season of 1734. The annunciation to the shepherds is an episode in the Nativity of Jesus described in the Bible in Luke 2, in which angels tell a group of shepherds about the birth of Jesus. The recitative begins with a tenor solo (the evangelist), followed by the soprano solo (the angel) describing the birth of Jesus. It concludes with the chorale, Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, for full choir. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

Markus-Passion (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

Unlike most passion settings with choir, soloists and orchestra, this version of the Markus-Passion has been conceived for band, narrator and mezzo soprano and baritone (or alto). The lyrics from the Gospel According to Mark have been used in full, which makes this passion quite unique. If desired, the lyrics of the evangelist can be spoken in any language, to make the work more accessible to the audience. However, because of the rhythms involved, the sung parts should always be performed in German. This special work should be a truly overwhelming experience for your audience! Duration: 54.30

Psalm 150 (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Rutter, John - Noble, Paul

Psalm 150 was composed for the Golden Jubilee Service for HM The Queen, 4 June 2002. With the premiere performance in St. Paul's Cathedral, London, the composer wanted to capture the acoustical qualities of the cathedral by placing three soprano soloists high in the dome, from which they sang as a trio at key points in the music. This arrangement, when performed by Concert Band alone, has those parts written for three solo trumpets to be placed in the rear or balcony of the concert hall. The work is filled with pageantry and ceremony, ending with the sound of cathedral bells ringing dramatically over the powerful scoring for band.

Ave Maria (Flexible Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waignein, Andre

Ave Maria, an excerpt from the Missa Solemnis, was written by Andr Waignein at the request of the Aosta Valley Regional Council, in Italy. Missa Solemnis contains all the musical parts that are used to accompany liturgical rites. However, the composer was keen to include an Ave Maria in memory of his mother, who was a very religious person and especially revered the Virgin Mary. This Ave Maria reveals a shimmering melody with very discreet orchestral support that allows the vocal or instrumental soloist to express their emotions through exceedingly generous musical phrases. Waignein has made this work for solo soprano or tenor and band, but it's also a very beautiful piece for several solo instruments such as flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, alto saxophone or trumpet. The composer naturally dedicated this Ave Maria to his mother. This moving piece will undoubtedly captivate your audience.Duration: 4:45
