Score onlyMysteries of the Horizon (After Four Rene Magritte Surrealist Paintings)A Concerto for Trumpet and Wind OrchestraMysteries of the Horizon is written and dedicated to Harmen Vanhoorne, and Matthew J George and the University of St Thomas Wind Ensemble.The subject material for my concerto are four surrealist paintings by the Belgian artist Rene Magritte (1898-1967). The movements are named after four of his paintings with the following titles:The Menaced AssassinThe Dominion of LightThe Flavour of LightsThe Discovery of FireAs part of my research I visited the Magritte Museum in Brussels to absorb myself in his works. Mysteries of the Horizon is not programmatic, but I have tried to colour each movement with the atmosphere of each Magritte painting. The work is unusual in that there are four movement, not the standard three. The second movement, The Dominion of Light, acts as a light relief between the first and third movements. The concerto gives much opportunity to the soloist to demonstrate different aspects of the instrument.- Nigel Clarke

Gemini Concerto was commissioned by and written for Ryukoku University (Japan), Andre Henry and Shoichiro Hokazono. Set in three movements, the concerto aims to explore the close relationship, as solo instruments, between the trumpet and euphonium, exploiting the many common factors between the two as well as the subtly different characteristics they possess in terms of both lyrical and rhythmic playing. This dazzling cornet/trumpet virtuoso piece was based on an air by Niccolo Paganini, and was originally composed for violin. Herbert L. Clarke was called the greatest cornetist of all time, and at the urging of another famous cornet soloist, Walter Rogers, Clarke was encouraged to write his own solos. His composition legacy includes over fifty solos, duets, and trios, as well as marches and works for concert band. Carnival of Venice may well be his best-known piece, and generations of brass players have worked to conquer and perform this masterwork. Duration: 3.30

The first movement of this work, an Allegretto, begins with a fanfare-like opening. After a number of other melody lines, a reprise of the beginning follows, which ends in a cadenza for the soloist. Movement two, titled Rituel, is characterized by interplay between the soloist and the band within a stately melody. In the final movement, the theme of the first movement's opening returns. As the indication 'alla marcia' of the last movement suggests, this Allegro Giocoso contains march-like music that guarantees a lively conclusion. With Concertino, Kees Schoonenbeek has written an appealing work that is very suitable for a beginner soloist. It is also available for trumpet and piano.Duration: 9.00

FANTASIE BRILLANTE (Trumpet Solo with Intermediate Concert Band) - Hunsberger, Donald
Scored for trumpet soloist Wynton Marsalis, Donald Hunsberger's band accompaniment arrangement of Fantasie Brillante No. 3 in Jean-Baptiste Arban's collection of Fantasias and Variations possesses a breadth of musical styles that demand strict formal analysis in addition to interpretative and technical requirements. The opening section features a flowing melodic passage followed by a technical passage with a return to the style of the opening melody. The theme is then stated which leads into three variations that employ variants in triplet groupings, quadruple 16th-note groupings, and finally, the ever-present triple tonguing, once again a primary technical resource utilized in this and others of the Fantasias.
