£135.95NAPOLI Variations on a Neopolitan Song (Cornet Solo with Intermediate Concert Band) - Hunsberger, Donald
Born in Germany, Hermann Bellstedt immigrated to America in 1867, where his family settled in Cincinnati. A prodigy on the cornet, he played with Patrick Gilmore as cornet soloist and assistant to the famous Ben Bolt, and, in 1904, joined the Sousa Band, playing alongside Walter Rogers and Herbert L. Clarke. Bellstedt's variations on Napoli feature the popular Neopolitan song "Finiculi, Finicula" (composed by Luigi Denza in 1880) that celebrated the funicular railway built up the side of Mt. Vesuvius in 1880. Other popular Amalfi Coast songs include "'O Solo Mio" and "Torna a Sorriento." A variety of solo textures, whimsical to intense, are demonstrated by this Donald Hunsberger arrangement dedicated to Wynton Marsalis as a part of the "Carnaval" project. The movements are named after four of his paintings with the following titles:The Menaced AssassinThe Dominion of LightThe Flavour of LightsThe Discovery of FireAs part of my research I visited the Magritte Museum in Brussels to absorb myself in his works. Mysteries of the Horizon is not programmatic, but I have tried to colour each movement with the atmosphere of each Magritte painting. The work is unusual in that there are four movement, not the standard three. The second movement, The Dominion of Light, acts as a light relief between the first and third movements. The concerto gives much opportunity to the soloist to demonstrate different aspects of the instrument.- Nigel Clarke

This dazzling cornet/trumpet virtuoso piece was based on an air by Niccolo Paganini, and was originally composed for violin. Herbert L. Clarke was called the greatest cornetist of all time, and at the urging of another famous cornet soloist, Walter Rogers, Clarke was encouraged to write his own solos. His composition legacy includes over fifty solos, duets, and trios, as well as marches and works for concert band. Carnival of Venice may well be his best-known piece, and generations of brass players have worked to conquer and perform this masterwork. Duration: 3.30
