Call of the Cossacks is part of the series of 'travelogue' features by Peter Graham, following in the footsteps of Cry of the Celts and Windows of the World. The Cossacks were a nomadic people whose ethnic makeup included Ukrainians, Tartars, Poles and Jews. A similarly wide range of Eastern European folk music features in this work, from Gypsy to Klezmer. Movement 1, Procession of the Tartars is cast in the old-style band 'patrol' and adapts a Klezmer folk song Fun Tashlach. The second movement, Doyle's Lament, is an original melody featuring solo alto saxophone while the final movement, Cossack Wedding Dance, is deep in Fiddler on the Roof territory - a pot pourri of Klezmer, Gypsy and Cossack styles. Each movement can be programmed separately.

Each section is based upon a traditional Welsh melody treated in free variation manner, respectively Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech), Suo-Gan (Cradle Song) and Codiad Yr Hedydd (The Rising of the Lark). This work consists of two movements. The first part is rather quiet and pastoral in character, written in a gently rocking 12/8 time and expressing the tranquillity of the area around the medieval town of Oudenburg in Belgium. After a beautiful orchestral climax the second section, inspired by the Roman past of Oudenburg, begins. A somewhat oppressive and impending introduction leads to the musical reflection of an army parade: Oudenburg was a so-called "castellum," and the remains of the fortress are still visible in the current town plan. A more dynamic passage follows featuring the low brass. After that, the solemn rhythm of the parade is recaptured, culminating in a triumphant ending. 0:09:00

Colditz Castle Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Written as a commission by the Stichting de Inrichting foundation of Wijk bij Duurstede (the Netherlands), Rob Goorhuis Requiem voor de mens (Requiem for Man) on lyrics by Andr? van Zwieten was composed in the year 2001. This work for choir and wind-band greatly impressed the audience, whilst its composer remained obsessed by its war theme. When he subsequently heard that the Rundfunk Blasorchester from the German town of Leipzig -a place not far from Colditz - was to dedicate a CD to his work, Rob Goorhuis got the idea to process some of the themes from his Requiem for Man into an instrumental composition about the famous Colditz castle. a place still bearing the scars of war. From 1933 to 1934, the castle was a Schutzhaftlager. During the Second World War, it was used as a prison for senior officers. From this prison, many escapes were undertaken, which even resulted in the castle being nicknamed The Escape School. In the seventies, a television-series about this period made the castle very well-known with the public at large.The despondent tone of the opening theme underscores the sadness caused by wars and violence. Nevertheless the works ending is hopeful and triumphant. Peace is celebrated, but with the hope for a lasting peace sadly remaining a topical issue to the present moment. 09:30
