The Three Musketeers, Op. 8 - Maxime Aulio
Les Trois Mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers) was commissioned by the Miraphone company for the Miraphone Tuba Quartett and the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix (Paris, France). It was premired in Guebwiller (France), on 28 June 2003 by its dedicatees.Even if you have never read a line of the mythical novel The Three Musketeers (1844) by Alexandre Dumas, father, you will at least have heard of the "four invincibles"; four extraordinary names - D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis - and one unique motto "All for one, and one for all." The musical texture of Les Trois Mousquetaires is focused on specific elements of a character's personality rather thanon its influence on the book's plot. Maxime Aulio has largely turned his attention on D'Artagnan, the sensitive, romantic and perfect gentleman who is easily charmed by women such as the gentle Constance Bonacieux and the perfidious Milady de Winter whose beguiling beauty seduced him. The first movement - D'Artagnan - is true to the character of the young provincial noble of the Gascony region: heroic and enthusiastic in all circumstances. The second movement entitled Constance Bonacieux, is romantic, delicate and passionate. The third and last movement is as duplicitous as the bewitching femme fatale its reveals: Milady de Winter.

Diptyque - Jan van der Roost
Diptyque is the French word for "diptych," meaning a hinged two-part image. The first section of this two-part musical painting has an Oriental feel, with characteristic pentatonic melody lines and chords. The second section is a cheerful Saltarello dance that brings out the subtleties of the woodwind section. A juxtaposition of Eastern and Western music, Diptyque reminds listeners of the power of music in transcending all cultural, religious and political boundaries.

Four Pictures - Árpád Balázs
The teachers under whom rpd Balzs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift rpd Balzs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Ngy kp (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given the title Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indul (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Jtk (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! Hungarian Rondo - Árpád Balázs
The Hungarian Rondo by rpd Balzs is cheerful, good-humoured music, a finely formed work crafted withgreat professional skill. Its structure is clear: the double recurrence of the rondo theme results in a five-part form. The two episodes differ in character. The first consists of increasingly densely woven imitations that chase eachother playfully, the second evokes the mood of bagpipe tunes. In the latter, above the melody moving evenly in crotchets in the middle parts a pastel-tinted cloud of woodwind notes floats upwards, while the sound is extended downwards by the deep-toned brass stepping lower by semitones. A brilliant device by the composer! In thecourse of its repeats the rondo theme appears more and more richly garbed, particularly the sparkling semiquavers of the woodwind make it ever more decorative. The Hungarian Rondo is the kind of music that drives your cares away.

Take the Blues Train - Robert Longfield
What a great combination - a locomotive chugging out of the station, gradually gaining speed, and the great American 12-bar blues form. This fun piece is loaded with special effects including a second percussion part with anvil, triangle, and suspended cymbal to simulate the sound of the train. The band adds a shhh to help generate more steam and excitement. A great crowd-pleaser!

Lest We Forget - Elliot Del Borgo
This extensive work is powerful and emotionally riveting. Slight variations of Civil War songs are recognizable while providing new material to keep the performer and listener engaged in the music. The piece changes style and tempo several times, ending with a very sensitive underscoring as a narrator recites Lincoln's second inaugural address before a heroic ending.

Call to Glory - Elliot Del Borgo
This extensive, processional-like piece is an easy grade 2 and will work nicely as either a contest warm-up or impressive concert finale. Most of the low brass and woodwinds are scored together and the second clarinet remains below the break. Eb is the highest pitch for trumpet.
