£250.00The England of Elizabeth,Three Portraits from (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Vaughan - Noble, Paul
This suite was derived from Vaughan Williams' score for the film, The England of Elizabeth, written in 1955. It was the composer's tenth of his 11 cinematic efforts and designed to serve a more descriptive role than other such scores, since the movie was a documentary featuring no action scenes, but lots of images of paintings, buildings, and the like. Composer Muir Matheson adapted this three-movement suite, probably shortly after the composer's death in 1958, though publication of the manuscript would not come until 1964. The first movement is entitled Explorer, and refers to Sir Francis Drake. Its music is mostly festive and colourful, but features interior passages of exotic flavor, similar in style to that of Vaughan Williams' then-recent Symphony No.8. The second movement is entitled Poet and, at about seven minutes, is the longest of the three in this 16 to 17 minute work. It also contains probably the score's best music, hardly a surprising result since the poet in question is Shakespeare, one of the composer's favourites and an inspirational springboard for so many other of his works. The mood is mostly subdued and Vaughan Williams presents lovely, if slightly somber music in the opening, and follows it with a hearty, folk-like dance tune. The latter part of this movement depicts Shakespeare as a noble, heroic figure in English history. The last movement, Queen, is devoted to Queen Elizabeth. It has a regal yet muscular manner at the outset, and features a gentle but somewhat disengaged middle section. It returns to the splendor and colour of the opening to close the work. This suite is important because it distills some of the best music from the film into a logically assembled structure. Program notes extracted from those of Robert Cummings.

£169.95JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH (Concert Band) - Graham, Peter
Journey to the Centre of the Earth is one of Verne's best known works. The novel takes the form of a sequence of diary entries by Axel, nephew of Professor Otto Lidenbrock. The pair follow coded instructions in a old document guiding them to Iceland where, together with their guide Hans, they enter the open crater of an extinct volcano Sn?fells and pursue a trail to the centre of the earth. There follows hair-breadth escapes and ventures perilous as the intrepid explorers encounter a vast interior world. Peter Graham has taken some of the key scenes .from the book and set them as a sequence of symphonic extracts. The subtitles are; (I) Sn?fells, (II) Descent, (III) The Wonders of the Terrestrial Depths, (IV) The Day of Rest, (V) Lost in the Labyrinth, (VI) The Whispering Gallery, (VII) Rescue from the Abyss, (VIII) Battle of the Antediluvian Creatures and Ascent, (IX) Homecoming

£19.95WARCRYE OF ELFEGEN (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Lawrence, Geoffrey
Extra Score. The piece depicts scenes from the mythological kingdom of Elfegen, the North European home of a ferocious race of warriors. From the tranquillity of the opening, where first can be heard the eerie 'warcrye', things move quickly on; figures are scurrying up and down the hills moving into battle positions. The intensity increases constantly and soon a fierce battle rages. In time, the fighting subsides and a period of reflective calm replaces the chaos that has gone before. During the lull in battle a lone voice is heard, as if trying to appeal for peace, for people to resolve their differences and see sense. The voice is, however, ignored and the conflict sparks off once more. The ruthless Elfegen warriors are not content until the victory is complete, a very loud, and triumphant climax is heard as another battle reaches its inevitable conclusion. (Grade 5) Performance time 6'38' (Recorded on QPRM133D FESTIVAL OF MUSIC 1999, Massed Bands of the Royal Air Force)

£99.95Scenes from Modern Life (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
This suite depicts various aspects of contemporary existence. First there is The Beating Heart of the City (3.20) with its clamour, jagged edges and persistent nervous energy. This is followed by an aspect of life that is timeless ?€" the vista of Clouds (3.30). This quiet and impressionistic movement is all about shapes gently forming and then merging and shifting. Finally, Coach Ride (3.06) is a manic journey on a bus (obviously not taking in the M25). This fast and furious little piece was originally written as an encore for the Buckinghamshire Symphonic Wind Ensemble. It is a romp of a coach ride during which a couple of nursery rhymes appear, including ?€The wheels on the bus go round and round?€.Duration: 10
