John Larsson and John Gowans collaborated on a number of successful Salvation Army musicals, Larsson providing the music to words by Gowans. The song 'Ask! Ask! Ask!' was one of the 'hits' from the musical 'Spirit' and has been used in a variety of contexts since its first appearance in the 1970s. This arrangement was written at the request of Ronnie and Jerome Astwood for the Somerset Community Church Band in Bermuda and is modelled (with apologies!) on the Louis Vega song 'Mambo No.5'.

Sketches on a Kentucky Hymn Tune is based on the hymn "Salvation." The composer was drawn to this type of tune because if its artful simplicity and interesting harmony. There are many opportunities throughout the interior sections of the piece to shape phrases and play expressively, and the Presto ending should be quite fast and energetic, but taken only as fast as the players can play with the proper articulation and control. Love Eternal was written by Gavin Lamplough for Neil Blessett, who at the time of writing was the Principal Horn player of both Birmingham (UK) Citadel Band and the International Staff Band of The Salvation Army. The arranger uses Jarod Cooper's popular contemporary worship song King of Kings, Majesty as the basis for the work and the piece seeks to provide a vehicle for the rich timbres of the tenor horn to be enjoyed by the listener. The music reflects the Christian musician's desire to offer their talents to God to be used by Him, and the lyrics of the song are ones of contrast as the musical journey of this piece seeks to emulate the juxtaposition through contrasting moods.
