Fire in the Blood was commissioned by Dr Stephen Cobb for the 120th anniversary of the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army. The piece was composed for the celebration concert where the ISB were joined by several other staff bands from around the world to perform independently to a sell-out capacity crowd at Britain's most famous concert hall The Royal Albert Hall. Fire in the Blood received its world premier at the 'ISB 120' concert at the Royal Albert Hall on June 4th 2011.With this piece I wanted to acknowledge music that had an impact on me through my Salvation Army upbringing. When thinking of a title for this piece I had no hesitation than to reflect and re-word the Salvation Army's motto under their famous crest 'Blood and Fire'.When composing Fire in the Blood I wanted to use three songs of worship that have been prevalent in the Salvation Army's services over a number of years. Opening with Richard Phillips' setting of Psalm 95, 'Sing for Joy', the music is vibrant and full of energy, I wanted to capture the spirit of the well known words of Scripture. The music then moves into a more reflective section that includes Howard Davies' emotive song melody 'Lord, you know that we love you' and Laurie Klein's worship song 'I love you Lord'.A re-statement of the opening Psalm setting follows and this, in turn, leads into a dramatic and powerful finale that combines two pivotal statements drawn from the slower, reflective section: I love you lord, and I lift my voice to worship you, O my soul rejoice and Lord, you know that we love you with a final flourish from Psalm 95: Come let us sing joy to the Lord!- Paul Lovatt-CooperDuration: 10:00

Major Barbara is social satire in three acts by George Bernard Shaw, performed in 1905 and published in 1907, in which Shaw mocked religious hypocrisy and the complicity of society in its own ills. Barbara Undershaft, a Major in The Salvation Army, is estranged from her wealthy father, Andrew Undershaft, a munitions manufacturer. Although The Salvation Army condemns war, it gladly accepts a large donation from her warmonger father, and she resigns in protest. The Army offers the poor only salvation, while Undershaft takes steps toward eradicating poverty. Barbara later comes to accept her father's views on capitalism and to believe that the greatest evil is the degradation caused by grinding poverty. Major Barbara was filmed in London during The Blitz bombing of 1940. During air raids, the crew and cast repeatedly had to dodge into bomb shelters. The film's producer-director, Pascal, never stopped the production and the film was completed on schedule. William Walton composed the film score, which was later arranged as a concert piece for orchestra by Christopher Palmer, from which this arrangement for Concert/Wind Band has been made.

When it first appeared in print, the work was widely performed by Salvation Army bands around the world. It is full of interest and presents plenty of what for many bands will be realistically achievable levels of musical and technical challenge.As with much Salvation Army music, it was inspired by words from scripture, specifically from Psalm 100. One of the members of The Salvation Army's 1960s phenomenon "The Joystrings," Joy Webb has a string of popular songs to her name, several of which contributed to the charts successes of enjoyed by the group. In more recent years, many of her tunes have found their why into instrumental repertoire.A prime example of Joy's remarkable gifting is her beautiful Share My Yoke. Although the deeply spiritual words of Share My Yoke may be unfamiliar to some, the sheer beauty of the melody is without doubt. The chorus is reproduced here to offer an insight into the song's meaning:Your slightest movement I will feel and understand.Share my yoke, and come the way that I must go,In our togetherness my peace you'll know.The world beholding us will see it's so.Calling for real sensitivity both from soloist and accompanying group, this is an extremely rewarding piece to play - and a moving listening experience for the audience.The arranger, Ivor Bosanko, who lives in California following retirement from the post of Territorial Music Director in The Salvation Army's USA Western Territory, is himself a respected songwriter, composer and arranger. He has produced this wonderfully sensitive and evocative arrangement of the song for cornet soloist and band. Already widely used and recorded in its original brass band form, this arrangement for concert band will undoubtedly be a useful and valuable addition to repertoire.

Program NotesRay Steadman-Allen is one of the most foremost composers of the Salvation Army. He has over 400 pieces published and has been a most inventive and creative composer since his first composition was published in 1945. Having officer parents meant Ray grew up in the Salvation Army. He himself became an officer in 1950 and subsequently held many positions within the SA culminating in 1967 when he was appointed as the Head of Music Editorial where he was responsible for selecting and editing all music to be published by the SA. His versatility means he can compose music for all occasions and for all instrumental combinations; from Championship section test pieces to a straight forward setting of a children's song.The march Southdown represents music of a simpler nature from this great composer and was composed originally for a music school in Bolney Court. Bolney Court, near Brighton, is close to the downs in the southern county of Sussex, hence the title. It follows the traditional form of a march and will be an attractive addition to the repertoire of most types of wind-band.
