Strike Up the Band is a 1927 Broadway musical by George and Ira Gershwin, based on a book by George S. Kaufman. Surprisingly, the show proved to be an early failure for the talented Gershwin brothers, closing while the out-of-town tryouts were still underway. Despite this setback, it was revised in 1930 with a somewhat similar plot by Morrie Ryskind, and the show enjoyed a respectable run of 191 performances. This arrangement by James Barnes includes four of the best tunes from Strike Up the Band: Mademoiselle in New Rochelle (composed for the 1930 revival), Soon (also composed in 1930), The Man I Love, and Strike Up the Band. Curiously, The Man I Love, which is now considered to be one of the most popular George and Ira Gershwin standards, was NOT included in the 1930 run of the show.

"Castrum de Dune" is an impressive work composed in 2021 to mark the acquisition of Dhaun Castle (Rhineland-Pfalz). Originally created as a fanfare and hymn for this ceremonial opening and premiered in a reduced instrumentation, the piece enjoyed considerable success. This inspired Michael Klostermann to orchestrate the composition for symphonic wind orchestra. The powerful fanfare opens the piece with striking, historically inspired sounds that musically reflect the Roman origins of the region. For Whom the Bells Tolls was commissioned by the Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra, who gave the premiere in their 10th anniversary concert, held in the Artane School of Music, Dublin, on the 31st August 2024.The commission was funded by money raised to provide a piece which commemorated friends and members of the orchestra who had recently passed away. This prompted the choice of title, taken from the famous poem by English writer John Donne (1572 - 1631), which reminds us that the death of anyone affects us all.The work opens with an enigmatic duet between oboe and clarinet. This is taken up by the full band and leads to the work's main theme, a lyrical chorale, which builds to a passionate climax. A central section, introduced by the English horn (cue clarinet), eventually leads back to a triumphal return of the chorale on full band. The mood subsides to introduce an echo of the opening material, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

Impetus represents both the character of this work and the state of mind of the Ensemble Musical de Maill, which commissioned it. The Ensemble's two conductors, Victorien Garreau and Grgoire Tapin, asked composer Thierry Deleruyelle to write an original work to mark the 115th anniversary of their orchestra. A brilliant and dynamic introduction, ending with a grand maestoso, is followed by a gentle, restful section with glimpses of solo instruments. The work concludes with a grand finale, taking up the theme from the beginning.

£233.99First Symphony, Op. 35 - James Barnes
Composed during the summer and fall of 1974, Barnes' FIRST SYMPHONY, Op. 35 was his master's thesis at The University of Kansas. It was premiered in the spring semester of 1976 by their Symphonic Band, Robert E. Foster conducting. The following year, the symphony was awarded the American Bandmasters Ostwald Composition prize, which led to a second performance (of only the first two movements) by the Northwestern Wind Ensemble at the American Bandmasters convention with Col. Jack Cline (U.S Marine Band) conducting. Following this performance, Barnes submitted the work to several publishers, all of which declined on the basis it was too long and difficult to be marketable. For this reason, Barnes set the work aside and there it remained until 2022, when an offer came from the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra to record all nine of Barnes'_x001A_symphonies to help celebrate their 100th anniversary. Barnes seized the opportunity, engraving all four movements, with revisions and corrections, an effort that took seven days a week for two months to complete. As a result, after almost fifty years, all nine of the Barnes symphonies are finally available for performance.
