A brilliant overture reflecting the strength and renewal of the phoenix. The phoenix symbolises transformation, death and rebirth in its fire and this overture starts with great positivity as the main 'phoenix' figure is stated. The brass pronounces its emphatic fanfare intertwined with the spiralling woodwind figures and then the music bursts into an energetic fast tempo. There are contrasting darker episodes and a lyrical middle section before the phoenix finally re-emerges triumphant.Duration: 7.30

A vibrant, rhythmic solo for trombone and band. La Chica sin Nombre was written in March 2020 at the request of Brett Baker. He wanted something in Latin style so I chose to go for a Mambo-type dance piece. This obviously works best with band accompaniment where I would always ask for Conga drums and Mambo Bell/Timbales rather than drum kit. The piece needs to be played with an appropriate feel for Latin music. It should sound light and easy to play but has a few tricky moments! Duration: 4.15

A concert overture with interest and colour for the whole band, Hope Springs Eternal was written during the seemingly interminable lockdowns of 2020. The intention was to compose some positive music as an encouragement during difficult times. It starts with a strident statement before turning fairly shortly to a more reflective response from the woodwind. The opening returns and this time the response is broader before it builds to a peak and unleashes the faster music that follows. Several melodic fragments are introduced before a minor key theme is established. The music becomes lighter as it progresses until it reaches the cheerful and melodic trio section. The minor section makes a brief return before being forever banished by the final statement of the affirmative opening music.Duration: 6.45

Alegria (Joy) is a vivacious four-minute concert opener full of energy and good humour. It begins with a fanfare-like statement from the brass while the woodwind weave decorative patterns around it. The following themes are occasionally a little quirky. Although there are occasional moments when a cloud obscures the sun the music is overwhelming optimistic in spirit and fun to play. This work was commissioned to open the Scarlet and Gold Concert in 2015. The concert is given annually in London by the musicians of the Household Division (Guards) of the Army, renowned for the splendour of their uniforms. The piece is intentionally energetic, vivacious and brilliant in style, seeking to capture the sparkle of gold in the uniforms with a few strong and majestic seams of scarlet underpinning the texture. There are no specific military connotations in the music and the piece is a dynamic concert opener for any programme. In the original performance a fanfare team was added for dramatic effect but the piece is fully performable without fanfare trumpets.Duration: 5:00

The title Light Music alludes to different things. Most of the music in the suite is light in nature, and is in the inherently British tradition of 'light music' - original pieces which are often descriptive but essentially melodic. In another sense the music depicts various aspects of light itself. The title itself is a trick of the light!The first movement, Lightscape, portrays shifting patterns and types of light, highlighting some details and obscuring others. It is sometimes vibrant, dancing and full of movement, and sometimes tranquil.The second movement, At the going down of the sun, considers the light of the sun as it sets. Because of the nature of his career, the composer has written a fair amount of ceremonial music and this movement is close to that genre once again. There is, in the title, a reference to the familiar Remembrance line 'At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them' from the poem For the Fallen by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) written in September 1914, a few weeks after the outbreak of the First World War. While the music is not a setting of these words - or in any way referential - there is an echo of the words 'We will remember them'.The suite finishes with Set Alight which starts off with a few combustible bars as the flame catches and then the fire is under way.Duration: 11.30
