A Brussels Requiem (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

The attacks in Brussels on 22 March 2016 created a shockwave throughout Belgium and the rest of the world. Equally, the attacks in Paris and Nice led to great public indignation, fear and disbelief. Bert Appermont’s intention was to voice certain emotions that these acts of terror have caused: particularly fear, grief, anger, and helplessness. He uses the French children’s song Au Clair de la Lune as a connecting thread throughout the work. Duration: 16.30

Crazy for Christmas (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

Christmas is the time of the year where everyone comes together, and peace, family and friendship bonds are strengthened. When selecting repertoire for your Christmas concert, it's difficult to find new arrangements that are both challenging and fun to work on, as well as fun for the audience. Crazy for Christmas is one of those pieces by the Belgian composer Bert Appermont. He uses canons and even fugues throughout this arrangement and foresees a spectacular ending. It is based on Il est n le divin Enfant and Away in a Manger but refers wittily to Jingle Bells, Deck the Halls, The Twelve Days of Christmas and Hark, the Herald AngelsSing. So 'crazy' all the way! Crystal Magic (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

The source of inspiration for this work is the magical world of gemstones. The special powers of four of these stones appealed to composer Bert Appermonts' imagination. The work is composed as a suite containing four movements: Carnelian: The Stone of Perseverance, Opal: The Stone of Misfortune, Amethyst: The Stone of Wisdom and Amazonite: The Stone of Playfulness. This is a challenging and striking piece of music to inspire your audience in a concert or a jury during a contest. Duration: 9.40

Battle of Hearts (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

The source of inspiration for this work was the play Das Kathchen von Heilbronn (Katie of Heilbronn), which was written by Heinrich von Kleist in 1810. The music evokes the underlying drama, tensions and emotions of the characters involved: “The Blacksmith’s Daughter”, “Kunigunde”, “The Fire” and “The Emperor’s Daughter”. The title ‘Battle of Hearts’ refers to the two women from the story (Kathchen and Kunigunde), who both fight to win the heart of Count Von Strahl. This is an impressive, non programmatic but strong thematic work suitable for concerts or contests. This work was commissioned by Blaserjugend Kreisverband Heilbronn.Duration: 16.30

BEAUTY OF BELISIA, The (Intermediate Concert Band) - Appermont, Bert

Belisia is the old Merovingian name of the Belgian town of Bilzen who commissioned this composition. It is also the composer's place of birth. The work has two main themes. The melancholic theme in a minor key refers to the many ravages the town has suffered through the years and the second theme, stately and heroic, represents the inner strength and courage of the proud inhabitants of this town. Gulliver's Travels (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

The book Gullivers Travels (1726) by author Jonathan Swift formed the provocation for writing this composition. Even though this composition isnt a literal representation of the original story, a number of elements were still retained. The ships doctor Gulliver finds himself in 4 (fictive) areas, each with their own inhabitants and customs. Each part of this suite also received the name of one of these areas:I. Lilliput The enterprising Lilliputians are represented by a playful, common theme in the first part.II. BrobdingnagIn the land of "Brobdingnag" Gulliver is carried off by gigantic giants, which you hear approaching with the sounds of the bassinstruments. The same theme is constantly repeated and quickened in order to increase the tension.III. LaputaLaputa is an island that floats in the air; its inhabitants are strange people with slanting heads. The dreamy, special atmosphere is especially well conveyed here.IV. The HouyhnhnmsFinally Gulliver finds himself in the land of the Houyhnhnms, where intelligent and noble horses rule over the primitive, undeveloped people (yahoos). The trumpets in the brilliant opening express the galloping horses; the gallant theme that follows (horns and trombones) symbolises the primitive yahoos. The whole composition ends with a big finale.I intentionally tried to limit the degree of difficulty of Gullivers Travels. Despite this I think that this work can appeal to many orchestras due to the colourful orchestration (cues are provided where needed), the simple and clear theme and the highly imaginative breeding ground of a beautiful story around which this composition is built." Hymn of Glory (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

This melodic hymn begins with a lyrical melody, handled by various instrument groups. After a gradual build, a first climax is reached, in which the brass instruments give full vent to their glorious sound in jubilation. Now we hear a second theme, resounding in the euphoniums, which ushers in a moment of rest. Then the excitement gathers again, building to a great tutti. The main theme is taken up once more, sounding now as a kind of universal gratitude.Duration: 4:00

This suite is based on the musical In the Shadow of Napoleon which celebrated its exceptionally successful premire in Worms, Germany, on 21 July 2014. The musical tells the story of Louis-Joseph Marchand, Napoleon's footman who is involved in the dispute over the emperor's inheritance and the unsolved mystery of his death. The composer strove to present the six musical songs in the suite in such a way that it appears to be an entirely new work. Duration: 15.15
