River Songs (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wagner, Douglas E.

Few young people live closer together than do band members, as they work together, laugh together and cry together through the years of their involvement in musical activities. It is sad indeed when death strikes. River Songs was commissioned to commemorate the lives of two such young musicians (one white and one African-American). These two appropriate works, "Deep River," and "Shall We Gather at the River," were chosen as witness to our common bonds in this life and beyond.Duration: 4.00

    Red River - Rob Wiffin

Red River is a piece full of raw energy. The title is about the feeling engendered by the name rather than a reference to a specific place. In the composer's mind it is a river coloured red by the dust of the earth in a hot, sun-drenched landscape. Full of fiery rhythmic drive and syncopation carried along by Latin percussion, performers will enjoy the vigour and verve of the music.Suitable for intermediate level (Grade 3/4) symphonic wind band.

    Red River Station - Bell

"Red River Station" is a bright and upbeat work emulating the style popularized by the soundtrack of the great American west. After the Civil War, cattle drives from Texas to Kansas included a stop at Red River Station along the Chisholm Trail, just before leaving Texas. The syncopated rhythms and pentatonic melodies bring to the life the vibrant and beautiful landscape and experience of riding horseback through the southwest. The energetic and inventive orchestration and exciting nature of this work make it an excellent fit for any concert, and a great contest or festival selection.

The River And The Rock - David Shaffer

"The River and the Rock" depicts the rich history of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, settled in 1735. Each short movement paints a musical picture of the city's history, opening with "Beginnings," depicting a frontier that was settled very slowly as hostilities between England and France encouraged Indian bounty hunters to attack isolated garrisons in the region. "Patriots" suggests the city's call to arms throughout history. "Prosperity" visits the industrial revolution and the city's rapid growth at the turn of the 20th century. Movement IV and V, "Decline" and "Revival," offer a musical insight into the city's decline throughout the 20th century and rebirth in the 21st century. Exciting and emotional, "The River and the Rock" merges history and music into a setting that your students will enjoy preparing. Excellent selection for festivals and contests!
