Bulgarian Dances is a free rhapsody, divided into four distinct movements based on famous Bulgarian folk songs. These songs have a very old tradition and stem from both the antique world of Byzantium and even earlier in the ancient and mysterious civilization of the Thrace region. In the beginning they were monodic songs, then diaphonic, with characteristic dissonances of major and minor seconds which make them unique. What also makes these songs so fascinating are seductive and complex irregular rhythms. The composer, while remaining faithful to the original spirit of the songs, has not hesitated to broaden the musical ideas, enriching them and making them more suitable to the rich palette of colours of contemporary concert bands. Valdemossa (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
Valdemossa, a town situated in the mountains of the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, inspired composer Matthias Rudolf to write this work. The picturesque Mediterranean village has a distinct Spanish flair, and the magnificent landscape surrounding the town leaves a lasting impression. Valdemossa is also a place of cultural tradition - composer Fr?d?ric Chopin spent several months in this town. The work consists of several parts merging with various characters. Calm, pensive passages alternate with expressive lyrical and rhythmic parts connected by a theme that returns in different variations. Spanish folklore elements--which are embedded in the formal structure of a "classical" rhapsody and represent the southern European atmosphere of Valdemossa--leave their mark on the complete work. 09:00

The piece was commissioned by the Norwegian Band Federation Hordaland and conductor Arvid Anthun for the 40th anniversary of Hordaland Youth Band in 2021. The piece is dedicated to Arvid Anthun.Several of our collaborations have focused on arranging and performing Norwegian folk music. This includes projects such as the one Manger Musikklag undertook in the late 90s, concerts, and recording sessions with Jlster Musikklag alongside the fiddler Sigmund Eiks, and now, for the anniversary concert of Hordaland Youth Band.Arvid desired folk music in a modern style. We discussed, among other things, Valter Aamodt's "Hordarapsodi," and he mentioned my Norwegian Dance, a funky piece where I incorporate a folk tune as a crucial element. Aamodt uses the melody "Eg rodde meg ut," or "Strilevise," as it is also known, in his rhapsody.The concept for Strilefunk was therefore to utilize one of the melodies Aamodt had used and additionally draw on the rhythmic experiences that we, as modern band musicians, bring from other genres.Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen
