At the end of 1944, Allied troops invaded the Netherlands from Belgium. Hope and longing for freedom, which now seemed so close, swept through the Netherlands: Operation Market Garden was launched. Huge numbers of paratroopers made the dangerous jump to take over enemy territory on the south side of the Rhine. Fierce fighting and attempts to cross and secure the river resulted in heavy casualties for the liberating forces. Ground support from the south came too late and there was no alternative but to call off Operation Market Garden. What looked like a quick liberation of the Netherlands turned into a long, bitter struggle. To make matters worse, a harsh winter followed: hunger and cold ate away at hope and the prospect of a liberated Netherlands. David W. Reeves (1838-1900) was a skilled cornet soloist and band leader. He was called the "Father of Band Music in the U.S.A." He wrote over 150 marches, galops and polkas. In 1981, The Second Connecticut Regiment was named one of the three "most worthy marches" by Col. William Santelmann, Director of the United States Marine Band. This new edition, by another former conductor of the Marine Band, brings the work up to the standards of his former bands library.

Incantation and Shadow Dance is a musical representation of the appearance of the witches in the Shakespeare play "Macbeth." The piece opens with two exceptionally long and emotionally charged measures, the mood slowly building, much like "chanting over a cauldron," dark, mystical and enchanting, invoking the spirits of the night. Then everything changes very abruptly, as a rhythmic introduction announces the appearance of the spirit dance. It represents a "dance macabre" and as such, brings a sense of impending evil and darkness to the mood until the full complement of spirits are now dancing around the fire. The gathering of "storm clouds" heralds the appearance of all manner of dark and sinister creatures joining the dance which builds to climax as all the spirits gather for the final frenzied finale.

March Grandioso, by the American composer/band leader Roland F. Seitz, is one of the most popular parade marches in America. It was written in 1901, and is one of over 50 marches that Seitz wrote between 1897 and 1930. The popular primary theme of the first half of this march is based on the fourteenth of Franz Liszts Hungarian Rhapsodies. This edition of the march for young bands is based on only the first half of the march.

Dark Prophecy begins in an intense, agitated manner that projects ominous portents of danger. It then transforms into an urgent dance, this time with the original melody played in a savage manner, before settling into a calm, more reflective mood. At this point, long soaring melodies take over, dominating throughout and leading to a moment of triumph at the conclusion of the section. This feeling is short-lived - the music takes a violent turn with the reappearance of the original thematic material. The piece then pushes to a fearsome conclusion that seems to pose the question, "Has the prophecy been fulfilled?"

Chivalry dates back to the medieval institution of knighthood; while its meaning has changed over time, Of Chivalry and Valor celebrates some of the central tenets deeply rooted in the original chivalric code. The militaristic opening depicts a courageous battle where knights demonstrated their loyalty, bravery, and valor, followed by softer and gentler values such as generosity and selflessness. For the finale we return to the battlefield to witness the chivalrous warriors heroic triumph. Of Chivalry and Valor was commissioned and premiered by Anthony Rivera, Eastern Technical High School, Baltimore County Public Schools and won the National Band Association Merrill Jones Composition Contest in 2014.

Ukrainian Rhapsody - Franco Cesarini
Folk music plays an important role in the life of the Ukrainian people. Their country covers an area of over 600.000 square kilometres and has more than fifty million inhabitants. In the north there are vast woods, in the west one finds the picturesque Carpatian mountains and valleys, and in the centre and the south Ukraine has its famous steppes with fertile black soil. The river Dnjepr divides the country in two, forming a natural frontier between the western and eastern regions, which each have their own distinctively different musical folklore. This diversity forms the musical basis for Ukrainian Rhapsody. The work consists of three movements: the first one, in a moderatetempo, without a pause flows into a slow but very expressive middle movement, resulting in a powerful climax. The composition ends with the Gopak: a rousing dance.

On 30th September 1791, a few months before his death, the opera "Die Zauberflote" (The Magic Flute) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was given its first performance. It was remarkable that despite his ill health and his disastrous financial situation he was able to compose a work of such comic genius. Mozart composed the overture in the two days before the premier of the opera and it is on this overture that this transcription is based. To perform the work 'a la Mozart' only the timpani part should be used, the additional percussion parts have been added by the arranger and are therefore optional.Mozart 40th SymphonyThe Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived atragically short life of thirty-five years. Towards the end of his life in the summer of 1788, he wrote three symphonies in the span of a little over six weeks. His Symphony No.40 in G Minor was one of those great works. This setting of the first movement from that Symphony provides ample demonstration of the composer's grace, inventiveness and pervasive sense of humour, which can be found throughout his music.
