Kilauea - Brian Balmages
Simple aleatoric passages help recreate the effect of an erupting volcano in this powerful yet extremely playable composition. Using bass drum to suggest the groaning of the volcano, the lyrical opening foreshadows the wildness of the eruption, and in transition, students play any notes and rhythms desired. As the lava begins to flow, a cacophonous ostinato appears over a menacing theme in the trumpets and low voices. In addition to the regular part, an optional advanced snare drum part is included for accomplished percussionists. Folk music plays an important role in the life of the Ukrainian people. Their country covers an area of over 600.000 square kilometres and has more than fifty million inhabitants. In the north there are vast woods, in the west one finds the picturesque Carpatian mountains and valleys, and in the centre and the south Ukraine has its famous steppes with fertile black soil. The river Dnjepr divides the country in two, forming a natural frontier between the western and eastern regions, which each have their own distinctively different musical folklore. This diversity forms the musical basis for Ukrainian Rhapsody. The work consists of three movements: the first one, in a moderatetempo, without a pause flows into a slow but very expressive middle movement, resulting in a powerful climax. The composition ends with the Gopak: a rousing dance.

Der Zaubermarsch - Rob Ares
On 30th September 1791, a few months before his death, the opera "Die Zauberflote" (The Magic Flute) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was given its first performance. It was remarkable that despite his ill health and his disastrous financial situation he was able to compose a work of such comic genius. Mozart composed the overture in the two days before the premier of the opera and it is on this overture that this transcription is based. To perform the work 'a la Mozart' only the timpani part should be used, the additional percussion parts have been added by the arranger and are therefore optional.Mozart 40th SymphonyThe Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived atragically short life of thirty-five years. Towards the end of his life in the summer of 1788, he wrote three symphonies in the span of a little over six weeks. His Symphony No.40 in G Minor was one of those great works. This setting of the first movement from that Symphony provides ample demonstration of the composer's grace, inventiveness and pervasive sense of humour, which can be found throughout his music.

Yellow River is a Vietnam era song (a protest against the Vietnam War) and describes the wish of a soldier at the front to return home.
