In Germany and Austria there are many beautiful Christmas carols, some of them such as 'Holy Night, Silent Night' or 'O Tannenbaum' are known and sung all over the world. Josef Hastreiter (1938) arranged some of these German Christmas songs ('Kling Glckchen', 'Lat uns Froh und Munter sein', 'Schneeflckchen', 'Tochter Zion', 'Jingle Bells') in his suite 'Klingende Weihnacht'.

Alle Jahre wieder, Ihr Kinderlein kommet, O du frhliche, Ser die Glocken nie klingen and Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, (Silent Night Holy Night), all well-known traditional German songs, are presented in a new and most tuneful varied medley. Thanks to the cue notes, the passages intended for large band can also be performed by smaller ensembles in a most satisfactory way. The alternative orchestral strengths are clearly indicated in the score. The piece can easily be performed without saxophones and without (French) horns. Of the four percussion parts (timpani, percussion with triangle, rattles and tambourine, drum set and mallets with (tubular bells), the combined percussion is indispensable.

Commissioned by the Starlight Band of Tulsa, Oklahoma, here is a piece that brings a broad palette of sonic colors to the concert hall. The light and spritely opening evokes images of darkening night skies as one by one the stars appear. Soon, as with the ever-growing number of stars, the instrumentation grows into an expansive mural, filling the halls with sounds as colorful and full as a clear starry night. Then, just as it started, the sounds begin to fall off and disappear, gradually fading out just as the stars before the approaching light of day.

£109.60Ancient Tales - Kevin Houben
Ancient Tales Commissioned by Fanfare Ellona Ell (NL) in honor of their centennial anniversary 2023 Ancient Tales was written by composer Kevin Houben in honour of the 100th anniversary of Fanfare Ellona, an authentic village association from Ell that values fun and fellowship. The piece is a musical representation of some of the legends and sagas that took place in and around the rural village of Ell, which probably owes its name to the many alder trees that defined the landscape around the 15th century. The somewhat mysterious opening of this work refers to the story of the sunken church in the Weerbroekskuil, where, according to the legend, bells are heard ringing on Christmas night and spirits in the form of lights are seen flying above the swamp. Presented here is the chorale that Houben composed for this work, which is woven like a thread throughout the composition in the form of melodic cells and motivic developments. Subsequently, the work continues with cheerful, energetic passages that are alternated with lyrical and more quiet sections. With some surprising melodic twists and metrical variations, Houben gives a nod to the turbulent history the citizens of Ell knew at the time of the 80-year war when the peasant country was plagued by marauding soldiers and gangs of thugs. By building the Ellerschans the people of Ell showed their resilience, to which the composer refers by constantly returning to cheerful and danceable themes which, thanks to the refreshing choice of metre, give the whole a cheerful character. Ancient Tales is a charming and energetic composition that triggers the enjoyment of playing of many orchestra members and will appeal to a wide audience. Moreover, the work offers every group of instruments sufficient challenge, making it suitable as a competition piece. Hence, Ancient Times was selected by Vlamo as compulsory test piece for the VLOF 2024.

The soundscape becomes fantastical, almost like a Halloween night.The villagers gather to hunt down the beast, with the orchestra conveying their determination through clear and energetic writing. The chase accelerates, breathless and spectacular, up to an uncertain outcome: the creature vanishes, without anyone having seen it. The initial chorale returns, calmer but not reassuring. The village regains its tranquillity, while retaining the memory of a mystery that has never been solved.
