Sergei Prokofiev's The Stone Flower (opus 118) is his eighth and last ballet, composed between 1948 and 1950. His most famous ballets are Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella and Le Pas d'Acier.The Stone Flower is based on a Russian folk tale from the Ural Mountains. The premiere of the work took place in 1954, one year- after the dead of the composer. The ballet's storyline, rich with myth and legend, is set against the backdrop of the mystical Ural Mountains and centers on themes of love, artistry, and the conflict between material wealth and spiritual fulfillment.In 1951, Prokofiev arranged five movements from the ballet which were later published as the Wedding Suite (opus 126). This composition for concert band was commissioned by Orchesterverein Wadgassen e. V. (Saarland/Germany) and its conductor Holger Jakobs. Thomas Doss has depicted the legend of the knight Maldix vom Litermont, a fierce hunter and an excessive drinker who, despite the warnings of his mother, was killed during a driven hunt in the woods, in a magnificent way. With the portrayal of various characters, the work offers a lot of variation.

"The Cosmographic Mystery" outlines the great mysteries and secrets of the universe. The musical foundation is a tribute to composer Gustav Holst, and his suite "The Planets". Each movement from the suite is quoted in the course of the piece. The title is taken from a book by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler, which was published in the 17th century. The book explains Kepler's cosmological theory that the distance relationship between the planets could be understood in light of the five Platonic solids. The theory proposes that the solids dictate the structure of the universe through geometry. "The Cosmographic Mystery" is supported by the Norwegian Composers' Fund, and was commissioned by Oslofjord brass.

The Eagle's Quest was commissioned by Brevik Musikkorps (Norway) to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Cort Adeler, a renowned Norwegian-Dutch sailor who was born in the town of Brevik in 1622. His Dutch name Adelaer means 'eagle'. This work celebrates his life but is not programmatic, simply reflecting Brevik's pride in one of its most famous sons. Towards the end of the piece there is a brief quotation from the town song, Brevikssangen, which is a fitting and captivating conclusion.

Songs from the Lowlands is a collection of songs from the 16th and 17th centuries from my native country The Netherlands, formerly known as The Low Countries. They are, by turns, patriotic songs by Adriaen Valerius from the time when our country was occupied by Spain, naughty love songs and a drinking song, Peeckel-Haringh. Songs from the Lowlands was written for the farewell concert of my dear friend Jim Yarnell, who has been the director of bands at The American School of The Hague for four decades. Jim conducted the premire at his final concert, April 8, 2022, and now enjoys a well-deserved retirement. Songs from the Lowlands can be performed instrumental or with choir (SATB).
