We sail the ocean with stubborn, hardworking but weak hearted Flemish fishermen to the Northern parts of the Atlantic. A sailor is leaving his wife or girlfriend not knowing if he is going to come back soon. Leaving for good fishing grounds around Iceland. This sad song(the first line of the text says; The wind that blows from the east, my love, is not going to blow for ever) is a solo for flugelhorn accompanied by the whole lower brass section. In a certain way of counterpoint tenorhorns, baritones and euphoniums are woven around thesoloist. The warmth from these saxhorn section is coloured by some chords from trombones and a quite virtuosi marimba line.

The opera or 'farsa comica' in one act 'La Scala di Seta' (The Silken Ladder) by Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) was first performed at the 'San Mois' theatre in Venice on 9 May 1812. It is the story of the beautiful Giulia whose guardian wants her to marry a rich young man. However, Giulia is already married to a young man who climbs every night into her room by means of a silken ladder. In the splendid overture of this opera Rossini gave an important part to the wind ensemble. This classic of the early 19th century repertoire has been most skilfully and enthusiastically arranged for wind band by Lorenzo della Fonte.

Christmas in the Alps enchants people because of the very special atmosphere with a combination of attentive silence and the blue shining moonlight. At Christmas time, one can often hear in the distance a small group of wind players performing some old traditional carols in front of one or other little chapel in the mountains. This Christmas Carol medley by Willi Mrz reminds us of that tradition. He has arranged tunes from ancient Bavarian and Austrian Christmas Carols and shepherd songs. The religious 'Andachtsjodler' is still sung at Christmas time in the churches of Bavaria and Tyrol.

Using three varying images from pursuits on the water, 'The Big Splash' has moments of excitement, soft melodies and crunching harmonies. Each section is given an opportunity to shine in this 3-part original work. Movement I entitled 'Launching' sets the scene of a speedboat accelerating into the water. 'Drifting' (mov. II) portrays images of the sunset over the water's edge and in the minor key there is a sense of thoughtfulness as well as tranquillity. The last movement has a grander feel to it. Titled 'Cruising' there are moments you can imagine a larger carrier chip setting sail as well as a sense of anticipation and excitement from those climbing aboard. It appeared on their album Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful, and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1966, for three consecutive weeks. The song features a series of car horns during the instrumental bridge, starting with a Volkswagen Beetle horn, and ends up with a jackhammer sound, in order to give the impression of the sounds of the summer in the city.
