Zoo Ball is score in five parts with various transpositions for each voice. Parts 1 & 2 are the Soprano parts. Part 1 should 'outweigh' part 2 in sound, if not in numbers, as it is often divided. Trumpets/Cornets and Clarinets should be divided accordingly between the parts. Part 3 is the Alto part. It is occasionally scored as an individual part but frequently doubles part 2 or 4. Part 4 is the Tenor part. Part 5 is the Bass part and frequently doubles part 4, either in unison or at an octave lower.The Zoo Ball is a suite of twelve light-hearted pieces for the young wind of brass band by Keith Strachan.It can be seen from the titles that the young player is introduced to a variety of dance rhythms that are both fun to play and enjoyable to listen to.It is scored in five parts (some of which divide in places) so can be played by ensembles of aroung ten players up to full band. When a fuller instrumentation is available, teachers and conductors are encouraged to vary the scoring as appropriate, particularly in repeated sections. Extra Score. Canyons is a response to the imposing landscape of the American South West, an exploration of musical ideas. The piece falls into four main sections. Following a build-up in the brass and woodwind, there is a slowish first section with massive chords, percussive pounding and some contrapuntal development of the work's main thematic idea. This is followed by a brief scherzo and then a slow movement which again derives from chordal material and another contrapuntal development. The fourth section is an extended Allegro Vivace, dominated by a dance-like theme introduced by the trumpets and an important motif heard at the start by the brass and percussion. After the final climax, the Adagio epilogue leads the music to a quiet close, the solo piccolo restating the cornet figure heard at the opening of the work. (Grade 4.5) Duration: 15 mins. Fanfare No. 1 (1995) In the summer of 1995 before his departure to the United States, a request from his high school band friends for a good concert opener sparked 19 year old Hokoyama to write his very first wind band composition.To capture the excitement of the rising curtain, the piece begins with magnificent brass ascending in 4th and 5th intervals. This is followed by the energetic entrance of the full ensemble like celebratory cannon fire. The following melody has many notes, yet is still simple. Do not overestimate it, just perform with driving momentum.In the slower middle section, utilize an instinctive vision of a scorching midsummer sun shimmering on the horizon. (Likely this shimmering sunset image was scored unconsciously, being composed in midsummer. A more applicable mood might be "Indian sunset". Perhaps this Indian style came from a capricious feeling of youthfulness.)The bright tempo and melody return for the last section. The climactic volley of musical display is like explosive fireworks as the last sounds echo throughout the concert hall.The composer wishes for performers to play from their hearts and not be limited by an analytic approach to the score-absolute accuracy is not required. Above all, the deepest pleasure for the composer is to know that teachers and students share the joy of music making with the intention of sharing it with others all over the world.With deepest gratitude, thank you for performing this work.
