The Zoo Ball is a suite of twelve light-hearted pieces for the young wind of brass band by Keith Strachan.It can be seen from the titles that the young player is introduced to a variety of dance rhythms that are both fun to play and enjoyable to listen to.It is scored in five parts (some of which divide in places) so can be played by ensembles of aroung ten players up to full band. When a fuller instrumentation is available, teachers and conductors are encouraged to vary the scoring as appropriate, particularly in repeated sections. "Pang" is an onimatopoeia that discribes the brutal forces unleashed from the very first bar. The stream of energy contiunes throughout the piece.The piece was comissioned by Bispehaugen Ungdomskorps (Bispehaugen Concert Band) in 1998. A version for brass band was written for Manger Musikklag and recorded by them on "Grafitti", Bjrn Sagstad conducting.

Columbus is a brilliant and dynamic overture with a soft and melodious central passage. The composer was inspired by the European space laboratory Columbus that is part of the International Space Station. In this lab, hundreds of scientific experiments are carried out on a yearly basis. This work was commissioned by the Brass Band Bourgueillois, which was founded ten years ago and has since been a 'laboratory' of musical creativity. In response to the many positive reactions to this attractive work, the composer has now also produced a version for concert band.

Bella Ciao is an Italian battle song, which became popular in Italy during World War II among partisans resisting fascism and national socialism. The song became a global resistance song against oppressive powers. In 2018, the song became known again through the Spanish Netflix series La Casa de Papel, in which the song was used multiple times. Jan van Kraeydonck wrote a skillful arrangement for concert band, fanfare and brass band.

"Introduction" is a short concert opener. I quote a couple of Norwegian Folk Tunes to make a musical picture of the Vikings running from the seashore to face a battle. They used to drink something made of mushrooms to prevent fear and pain - They became Berserkings! The piece was originally scored for Brass Band and commissioned by Manger Musikklag in 1998. This version was commissioned by The Royal Norwegian Navy Band in 2002 and re-edited in 2018.

Leviathan - Peter Terry
At times dark and sinister and at others bold and dynamic, Leviathan takes the listener on a journey along with the mythical sea monster that is found in many books and mythology. Peter Terry has crafted a bold new contest work that students will love, with all of the angular rhythms and modern sounds. This piece is at the lower end of the difficulty level and contains many instances of unison low brass that can be helpful for a band with lesser forces in this area of the band.

Aardvark Parade - Graydon A. Toms
You can almost smell the aardvarks! Oh, no, wait. The kids had P.E. just before band rehearsal. Never mind.Seriously though, this cheerful and engaging new piece by Graydon Toms is a sure winner for every Grade 1 1/2 band. Big areas of contrast between the upper Woodwinds and the Brass and Saxophone combination ensure that each player feels important to the group, while an easy change of tempo near the end helps the piece sound harder than it plays.Whimsical!

Galactic Conflict - Timothy Loest
This invigorating work makes great use of percussion. Reminiscent of Holst's famous portrayal of Mars, the driving rhythmic motif is immediately introduced with rhythmic hits reinforced in the upper brass and woodwinds. Several themes are layered for an effect that is easy to achieve with bands at this level. A brief lyrical section provides some creative harmonies which will help develop the musicianship of your band. The opening material then returns for a powerful conclusion. Highly recommended!

This has become a Christmas song that has its roots in a love duet between the young Fleksnes and classmate Victoria. The class will be competing with a duet in a song competition. The text gives hope of love and links it to Christmas traditions. "A Dream of Christmas, About Love" is the first line of the text. "The Young Fleksnes" runned as advent calender on TV Norge in 2010. This arrangement feature an Alto Saxophone player and a euphonium / baritone / trombone player. If you should choose to use the soloist parts from the Brass band version for Flugelhorn and Euphonium, please use both parts, because some of the phrases has been changed. Please be aware of thedynamics between soloists and accompaniment. Adjust the dynamics according to the musicians in the ensemble.

Rendezvous was commissioned by Krohnengen Brass Band for their 50th Anniversary in 2019. This version for Concert Band was scored autumn 2020.Rendezvous is devided into three sections. Each section are referring to Edvard Grieg's own titles. but twisted, to make sure that everybody understand that this music is a mash-up of themes Edvard Grieg used in opus 54 (for piano) and opus 61 (songs for children).1. Trolltog med avsporing (March of the Trolls derailment)March of the Trolls is a famous part of Edvard Grieg lyric pieces, opus 54.2. Klokkeklang i feil sang (Bell ringing in wrong tune).Bell ringing show that Grieg was one of the first composers to write the way impressionists did. What happens if this beatiful piece is combined with several other themes from the same book? It somehow works in its own way.3. Pep talk til Blakken (Pep talk to Blakken)The riff used in the first part becomes an important part of the third part: a funky treat of the childrens song "Kveldssang for Blakken" (Evening song for Blakken).I felt that a rather tired old horse needed a pep talk more than a slow tune. So that is why you get this music(!) - and this is how my rendezvous with Grieg ends.Not sure what maestro Grieg would have thougt... But, I have read that the fiddlers that played the tunes Grieg used was not happy with the way Grieg used them.So there you go...Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen
