Bite the Bullet by Mexican-American composer Jorge Machain was named 2019-2020 winner of acclaimed The American Prize for music, in addition to being a finalist in the 2018 NBA Revelli competition. The work was inspired by a painting by Venetian artist, Carlo Marchiori, which depicts two Pulcinelli (Venetian clowns) engaged in a gun battle. As the bullets meet in the middle of the scene, a colorful and vibrant cloudburst is created. Using a unique sonic colour scheme, the brass and percussion portray the gunshots, while the woodwind flourishes emulate the painter's vibrant brush strokes. Duration: 7.00

The Way to Heaven (Droga do Nieba) was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force thwarted Hitler's ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK. The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear the signal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron's Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs to intercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.Duration: 4.30

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off stage and a little march for brass and flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. The work's quiet section temporarily soothes down the heated passion of its two corner movements, but everywhere else action is required throughout. The work was commissioned in 1991 by Troms? Brass. Situated just above the Polar Circle, Troms? is one of Norway's northernmost towns. Topographically, the town probably comes across as freezing cold, but Troms? is famous for its 'warm' night-life. Suite (From Der Rosenkavalier) - Richard Strauss
Richard Strauss (1864-1949) is mainly known for his symphonic poems such as Don Juan, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben,... However, he also wrote many operas and "Der Rosenkavalier" (created in 1911 in Dresden) with a libretto by Von Hofmannsthal is probably the most popular of them all. In our "Jan Cober Series", we would like to present this very special arrangement of the suite from "Der Rosenkavalier". Jan Cober worked extensively on this arrangement and carefully composed this new suite. In this respect, he preserved the necessary mood and vitality of Strauss's music so it could be played by a brass band. He has done this without losing sight of the musicaltension of the original.
