The Unknown Journey was commissioned by Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band which was established in 1954 and has grown to become one of the top college bands in Japan. The composer chose the title as the piece seemed to create its own momentum as it developed, starting slowly and continuously increasing the tempo. Towards the end it gradually transmogrifies into the closing bars of Ravel's La Valse, a piece which perfectly characterises the idea of unstoppable momentum. Bad King Wenceslas is a playful twist on the familiar Christmas carol Good King Wenceslas. Throughout the piece, rhythmic and melodic motifs from the carol are presented in a dark, mysterious context. The introduction features an ostinato in the flute, building in momentum before revealing the melody in double time in the lower winds. The piece progresses with alternating eighth-note patterns and a variety of thematic development, culminating in a canon that features different instrument sections. The piece transitions through a dramatic key change and ends with fanfare motifs in the brass. The conductor should ensure that the melody remains balanced throughout, and all percussion parts are integral to the mood and momentum.

£60.00Paddy Lay Back - Steven Rosenhaus
Sea shanties (or chanties) are songs sung by sailors to keep them synchronized (and mentally interested) while doing the hard labor of sailing. "Paddy Lay Back" is a capstan shanty, a capstan being a vertically-axled rotating machine used to raise and lower a ship's anchor. Sailors would rotate the capstan by pushing poles radiating from it, with three or four men working a pole. The song would help them keep momentum; if not, something could slip. Not only would the anchor drop uncontrolled, but the capstan would spin quickly and the poles could throw and harm the sailors.1st trumpet's highest note is G. 1st & 2nd clarinets cross the break
