£97.00Four Scottish Dances - Malcolm Arnold
These dances were composed early in 1957, and are dedicated to the BBC Light Music Festival. They are all based on original melodies but one, the melody of which is composed by Robert Burns. This Classic Band Edition is the definitive wind ensemble orchestration of worldwide renown, as referenced in the composer's own Program Notes:"The first dance is in the style of a slow strathspey -- a slow Scottish dance in 4/4 meter -- with many dotted notes, frequently in the inverted arrangement of the 'Scottish snap.' The name was derived from the strath valley of Spey. The second, a lively reel, begins in the key of E-flat and rises a semitone each time it is played until the bassoon plays it, at a greatly reduced speed, in the key of G. The final statement of the dance is at the original speed in the home key of E-flat.The third dance is in the style of a Hebridean song and attempts to give an impression of the sea and mountain scenery on a calm summer's day in the Hebrides. The last dance is a lively fling, which makes a great deal of use of the open string pitches of the violin (saxophones in the band edition)."

Written for the Chicago Staff Band's tour of England in 2015, this exhilarating work was premiered at The Salvation Army's Boundless International Congress at London's O2 Arena to an audience of 20,000 people. It has since been arranged here for wind band. The piece is structured as a through-composed triptych, weaving together the popularcontemporary worship songs Shine on Us (Michael W. Smith) and Speak, O Lord (Keith and Kristin Getty) with the historic Salvationist anthem The World for God (Evangeline Booth) to explore themes of light, guidance, and mission. The work opens with energy and rhythmic drive, centering on Shine on Us. A stark contrast follows in the meditative middle section. Here, the music explores the contemplative depths of Speak, O Lord, featuring solo horn. The final section introduces a nostalgic and stirring reference to General Evangeline Booth's classic hymn, The World for God. The finale juxtaposes all three themes. As the disparate melodies intertwine and layer upon one another, the music builds to a triumphant climax - a representation of 'illumination' that celebrates a shared faith across generations. The streets appear in the light of the electronic billboards and loud music can be heard from the nightclubs. Music whose rhythm goes directly through the body and puts us in a cheerful mood. In his piece "Smash" Manuel Renggli tries to describe this floating and at the same time somewhat frightening situation. "The beat", the rigid and always constant meter plays a decisive role. A feeling of lightness arises, the worries are taken away. For a short moment one finds itself in a kind of ecstasy.

In this cheerful, minimalist piece, the composer seeks to capture the effects of light shining, refracting, and reflecting through glass of various colours and densities. While adopting familiar minimalist features - repetition, consonant harmony, and a steady pulse - the composer is mindful of the inherent risk in the style of allowing ideas to linger for too long. To avoid this, the patterns and colours shift subtly, creating a sense of gentle transition alongside an impression of dance and energy. Most of the woodwind instruments take on fluid semiquaver movement at some point, though the music itself is not technically demanding.Duration: 3.45
