Hobbits Dance & Hymn - Johan de Meij

The famous trilogy The Lord of the Rings by English writer J. R. R. Tolkien, published in 1955, has brought enjoyment to several generations of readers. Johan de Meij himself took the inspiration for his first symphony for Concert Band, The Lord of the Rings, from this great series. This easy arrangement of two movements from the symphony, Hobbits Dance & Hymn, has been carefully carried out by Paul Lavender. An ideal work for all junior bands who wish to play the music of the Concert Band master, Johan de Meij.

Dance of the Seven Veils from Salome - Richard Strauss

Oscar Wilde, author of Salome, described the scene simply as "Salome dances seven veils' dance." Though the goal is seduction of her stepfather King Herod, Salome's actions aren't overtly erotic, at least initially. A manic introduction in the score is halted by the dancer, who begins again with a languid, deliberate act of attrition, as the orchestra presents heavily ornamented long tones, interspersed with waltzes and teasing melismas. Salome's tempo gradually increases as she sheds her veils in a final frenzy, then collapses as though in exhaustion. After a moment's pause, she rises again to throw herself at Herod's feet in triumph. An arrangement of Salome was commissioned by Tsuman Junior High School Wind Orchestra for use at the All Japan Band Competition. That version was two thirds of this work; the remaining third was too technical for use at that time. This full version was completed for a recording by the Ground Self Defense Force Central Band for the Brain Company/Bravo Music CD "New Arrangement Collections Vol. 8."(Kazuhiro Morita)

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Smith, Claude T. - Earp, Joseph Benjamin

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is a Christmas prelude originally commissioned by the Papillion, Nebraska Junior High School Symphonic Band under the direction of Kenneth A. Molzer. This widely popular song relates to Advent and Christmas. Claude T. Smith expanded upon the original hymn adding deeper musical interest to this already timeless classic. This flexible arrangement allows ensembles to perform the work with as few as twelve musicians providing accessibility and flexibility for numerous instrumentation needs, while still allowing a full ensemble sound.*The posted recording is based on the full band scoring but aligns with the suggested preferences for either woodwinds/strings or brass suggested in the score.

Princess Mononoke Fantasy Scenes - Joe Hisaishi

Princess Mononoke (1997) is recognized for its outstanding soundtrack. The CD "Princess Mononoke" recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra after the film's release is also widely known. The CD arrangement follows the soundtrack and adds detailed scenes from the film with some development.Consider this arrangement a sequel to my previous "Selections from Princess Mononoke" as I have utilized additional songs from the soundtrack.By commission request from Mr. Shindo, director of the Girls Junior & Senior High School band club of Seitoku University, I arranged "San and Ashitaka in the Forest of the Deer" and "World of the Dead." The original features piano solo, which is very appealing. I made it optional which can be played by other instruments if needed. The reference CD is utilizes all instruments so pleaseselect the solo voice best suiting your needs.(Kazuhiro Morita)

    Celtic Fantasy - Keiichi Kurokawa

"Celtic" is a widely used term. Its history and culture expands to modern day Spain, Portugal, and North America. However, in this piece, I have based my music on the typical "Celtic" areas of Ireland and Scotland. The Bagpipe drone at the beginning reappears several times. After the introduction, the music transitions to an Irish Reel, The Wind That Shakes The Barley. Reel is a fast tempo dance, often in 4/4 or 2/2 time.Next is the Scottish folksong Auld Lang Syne, known as "Hotaru no Hikari" in Japan. The third movement is called Scotland the Brave. It is often performed by military bagpipe ensembles. Once air is blown into the bag, there is a constant reservoir of sound for Great Highland Bagpipes.A Part (advanced) is a grade 2.5-3 in American grading system. B Part (beginner) is 1-1.5.B Part is accessible for elementary school and junior high school beginning band students in Japan. However, the drone-sounding sections require a certain technique to hold the sound steady. It is my sincere desire that beginning musicians understand the importance of fundamentals through performing good music.Keiichi Kurokawa

    Weather Report - Shin'ya Takahashi

Weather Report was commissioned by Marunouchi Junior High School in Nagano in 2010 and premiered at the Nagano State Band Contest. One of my new thoughts for composition has been to ask students for titles, images and ideas. For this commission I collected many interesting concepts, and quite a few had to do with weather. So, I constructed the piece based on weather news and report. After the main weather news presentation, the meteorologist presents the daily weather forecast:"The morning will be clear and beautiful becoming cloudy at noon and eventually shower later. Rain intensity will increase turning into a thunderstorm. Towards the evening, rain and storm will leave, and there will be a beautiful sunset. That's the weather for today."(Shin'ya Takahashi)

    Freedom's Promise - James L. Hosay

A modern but patriotic setting with optional narration makes FREEDOM'S PROMISE a moving and versatile Grade 3 piece you will want to add to your band library. It's an ideal patriotic feature for school or community performance. A musical tribute to The Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution, the optional narration can be read by one, or divided between a number of students. Many Junior High students in the U.S. spend a large portion of a year in Civics, History or Social Studies classes learning about their government and it's founding documents. A performance of FREEDOM'S PROMISE on your Spring concert is a perfect "cross-curricular tie-in" for your music program. Some school districts have special funding for purchase of special cross-curricular materials. Don't miss it!
