The Barber of Seville is based on the first of Beaumarchais' (1732- 1799) two sequential plays, The Marriage of Figaro being the second, although unusually the overture does not contain any themes from the ensuing opera. The music, however, is sparkling and tuneful encompassing the 'spirit' of the story that is about to unfold. The overture follows the form of the classic Italian style, with a slow introduction followed by a brilliant Allegro. Of course, the famous crescendo, so typical of Rossini's works, is also present.

This work is dedicated to the Accademia Musicale Francigena in Monterosi, on the occasion of the third 'Tommaso Albani' a national concert band competition at which the composer is often an adjudicator and guest conductor. The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the 'Tiroler Landeshymne' (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melody appears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its 'couleur locale': for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!Duration: 11:00

Scaramouche was commissioned by Katrina Marzella with a grant from the BBC Performing Arts Fund.Undoubtedly the finest baritone player of her generation, Katrina was granted an education bursary from the BBC Performing Arts Fund as a result of winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist of the Year in 2004. This has allowed her to commission a series of new works for her instrument, including Scaramouche.In this version for euphonium and concert band, Scaramouche continues Sparke's series of works which uses the Italian improvisational theatre tradition of commedia dell'arte as an inspiration. Pantomime, Harlequin and, now, Scaramouche draw on the contrasting moods of pathos and comedy characterised by the happy/sad masks which symbolise European theatre. A slow expressive ballad, followed by a spirited vivace allows the composer to exploit both the lyrical and technical sides of the euphonium, therefore giving the soloist the chance to display the full capabilities of their instrument.Duration: 7.00

Don Carlo was originally written (title Don Carlos) as a French five-actor for the 1867 world exhibition in Paris. Later, Verdi transformed this improant grand opera into a four-acter in Italian. With its many leitmotifs, Don Carlo was 'too Wagnerian' according to French critics, although Verdi hardly knew the music by his German colleage. For the record, the composer was not happy either with the 'lifeless and cold' performance in Paris, and the drama, concerning Charles V, Philip II and crown price Don Carlo, found its way to La Scala only twenty years later. This duet, arranged by Johan de Meij, originates from the second act. While monks pray for the soul of Emperor Charles V, his grandson Don Carlo takes the stage, tormented by the fact that the woman he loves is now married to his father. Carlo's friend Rodrigo, the Margquis of Posa, has just returned from Flanders. He asks crown prince Carlo to help him ease the oppression and suffering of the Flemish people. Carlo reveals his secret: he is in love with his stepmother. Rodrigo advises him to leave Spain and to go to Flanders. The two men vow to be friends forever in the duet Dio, che nell' alma infondere (God, who wishes to instil love and hope in our souls). Duration: 4.00

The Andante from the first movement of Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony (often nicknamed Pilgrims' March) contains the most beautifully haunting melody supported by the simplest of bass lines and counterpoint figures. As a young musician, Graham Lloyd was so fascinated by this music he bought the orchestral score to study the notes, which at the time made little sense to him. However, he did notice that the bass line was similar to a "walking bass" line in a standard swing tune.In this composition Graham Lloyd uses Mendelssohn's original bass line, melodic line and counterpoint figures but gives them a swing feel. Who knows, maybe if Mendelssohn had been born a hundred years later, he could have become one of our big band leaders!Duration: 5:15
