His love for Italy explains Carl Wittrock solid in the composition Tignale, named after the same village that he visited one of his vacations. This village dominates the image of the western shore of Lake Garda, where it has a view on the Monte Baldo at the other side of the lake. It is a busy resort and center for excursions in the area. The enchanting location and stunning natural beauty inspired the composer to a musical description of Tignale and its surroundings. De betoverende locatie en het overweldigend natuurschoon inspireerden de componist tot een zeer beeldende muzikale schildering van Tignale en haar omgeving. Een indrukwekkend werk en een prachtige uitdaging voor orkesten in de middenafdeling.

A brief history: Pentecost Monday was a special day for schools in Yorkshire (England). There were a variety of activities. The pupils of Sabine Baring-Gould would meet with the children of a nearby village. It seemed like a good idea that during the walk would be sung. But she could not find a suitable song and decided to write one by herself. "Onward Christian Soldiers" was the result. It soon became very popular, though she herself was not entirely satisfied with the rhyme scheme. The melody used (St. Gertrude) was by the famous English composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan. Back to now: Gawan Roberts, has given the hymn a proper update. He gave the still popularsong a solid rock beat and added daring harmonies. So it's popular, for current generations, again for years. Onward!

In the composition 'La terre' several aspects of Earth have been translated into sounds in an associative manner. The first part depicts Nature, Mother Earth, stability, the soil which is the source of life. Earth symbolizes tradition, rituals, fertility. In the music of the composition this can be heard in tonic and ostinato passages. Furthermore, human emotions such as gladness, sorrow, wonder, resignation, hope and despair, indissolubly connected as they are to mankind's life on earth, are musically reflected in sudden gusts of expression. Earth for us human beings is the solid ground on which everything in life takes place. In the second part different moodsare evoked in a sort of toccata. Now and then the music sounds fragmented, at other times as a solid whole. The robustness of the music in this part has its roots in the earth, originates from it. It reflects stability and strength, but love and nostalgia are also present in soft and fragile tones. 'La terre' is a musical narrative about Earth, in which music has been given ample room to show its many-sided beauty.

In 2006 Brabant will be celebrating it's 900th anniversary. On May 13th 1106 the count Van Leuven was appointed duke of Brabant. This was the birth of the duchy of Brabant. For centuries this duchy, situated in the heart of the Netherlands, was the primary of the seventeen provinces in the Lowlands. Brabant formed with it's capital cities Brussels, Leuven, Antwerp and 's-Hertogenbosch the focal point for politics, culture and economy. The revolution against Spain (1566-1648) caused a fracture between the North and South. The old duchy was divided into a Dutch and Belgian part. Even though each had their own historical background, the bond forged in the past was partially keptalive. To this day we still have a duke of Brabant. The Rapsodie Symphonique, written in 1976, was commissioned by the French Broadcasting Institution for the European Radio Composition Contest. It was recorded by the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix conducted by Dsir Dondeyne on 4 March 1977 and was awarded a First Prize at the E.R.U. (European Radio Union) contest. The rhapsody was published in 1978 and dedicated to his American friend Professor Al Wright, conductor of the Purdue University Band. The latter recorded the composition in 1979 as it had already recorded the Festival Kerkrade Jan Molenaar conducting in 1971 and the Parade Concerto with the composer at the piano and Jan Molenaar conducting in 1973.
