Porco Rosso - Joe Hisaishi
From the 1992 Japanese animated film about an Italian World War I flying ace who, for a wartime misdeed, was transformed into an anthropomorphic pig. The flamboyant post-war story of Porco Rosso (Crimson Pig) battling air pirates is full of intrigue and romance, and the film's diverse and lush soundtrack is one of the more rare Studio Ghibli scorings. Mr. Tomoki Ubata, (band director at Ina Gakuen Sr. High School) assisted with medley design as we both became intrigued with the music.The sixth song, Kyouki ~ hishou (insanity & soaring), appearing on Joe Hisaishi's album "My Lost City", is often performed for his concerts. Due to its complexity I am sure this is one of Hisaishi's favorites. I also added the French chanson "Le Temps des cerises" (Antoine Renard) that Madame Gena sings in the film. This is my favorite of all chansons; I was happy to include this bittersweet, beautiful melody.The following themes are contained in the arrangement:1. Le Temps des cerises2. The composer writes:"On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan.I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title tohonour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate.It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time".Philip Sparke

This arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach Andante from Organ Sonata No. 4 was created under the Covid times. Under the long days of isolation, I found the recording of the Islandic virtuoso Vikingur Olafsson.A fantastic recording, and An arrangement for windensemble grew in me. I have tried to find the most beautiful sounds of the windband, and challenge the whole band.I recommend listening to the recording to understand my goal with the arrangement. The movement was a part of the windband Opus 82 performance in Norwegian National Championship in 2022

Based on the exhilarating bike ride on the Seymour Valley Demonstration Forest trail and a detour into the remote, beautiful Lost Lake, I associate this piece with some great memories. Glistening in a quiet peace, Lost Lake_x001A_also known as Rolf Lake_x001A_is calm and warm in the summer. Not many people know about it, so it is easy to find yourself alone, surrounded by beautiful nature, isolated from humanity. Back in high school, I would bike up to Lost Lake with one of my best friends Masanori Miyanabe, we'd have music playing off a bluetooth speaker as we biked against the cool air under the hot sun. Powering through uphill stretches with the reward of gliding downhill, when we would finally make it to the lake, we would put our bikes down by the bushes_x001A_no locks, no security_x001A_and we would make our way down the rough logs towards the tiny strip of land suitable for basking in the sun, snacking, and maybe even swimming. In order to beat the sunset, reluctantly, we would mount our bicycles once again and find our way back to the Seymour Valley trail, where we would enjoy the evening ride home. -D.I.D. Choi

A good friend of mine, trombonist and professor Jesper Juul Windahl commissioned me a trombone quartet. I then wrote Four Nordic Folk Pops. The last of the four is a Norwegian tune called Havard Hedde in a funky version. Then I made a brass quintet version for Lofoten Brass Quintet for a their Australia tour. The trombonist in the quintet asked me for a brass band version to be used in an entertainment contest (SIDDIS Brass). Havard Hedde did not succeed in getting married, but I think this version wil make him dance again. Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

Premiered at Kyo-En V in 2003, Kawagoe Sohwa Wind Ensemble, Masato Sato, conductor.I know the conductor and band inside out, so I enjoyed composing this work very much, thinking about their personalities. The piece features the sax section, and the performance style is characterized by interplay between a vibrant jazz quartet and a solid pops windensemble.Now that the work is published, I hope you add it to your concert repertoire. Encore! was commissioned by Ishikawa Prefecture Band Association to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2010. The commissioning request was that the piece be fun and appropriate as an encore. I made it simple and enjoyable for everyone.The only thing I added was an appealing introduction so each entering section might feel the importance of their instrument. That's why there is a specified appearance order involving standing. It goes from 1) clarinets, 2) piccolo, flute, horn, oboe and bassoon, 3) percussion, 4) euphonium, tuba and double bass, 5) trombone, 6) saxophone to 7) trumpet. Lastly, all sections stand up together and greet the audience. Technically, it's a medium grade level. There are substitutions for bands lacking oboe, bassoon or double bass.The title was selecting hoping for a fun, grand finale. It also means "more" and "again." My hope is for performers and audience to enjoy music, and for Ishikawa Prefecture Band Association to nourish its band movements and activities. I could not ask for more if people come to love music even more by experiencing this work.(Yo Goto)

Princess Mononoke Fantasy Scenes - Joe Hisaishi
Princess Mononoke (1997) is recognized for its outstanding soundtrack. The CD "Princess Mononoke" recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra after the film's release is also widely known. The CD arrangement follows the soundtrack and adds detailed scenes from the film with some development.Consider this arrangement a sequel to my previous "Selections from Princess Mononoke" as I have utilized additional songs from the soundtrack.By commission request from Mr. Shindo, director of the Girls Junior & Senior High School band club of Seitoku University, I arranged "San and Ashitaka in the Forest of the Deer" and "World of the Dead." The original features piano solo, which is very appealing. I made it optional which can be played by other instruments if needed. £84.99A Copland Portrait - David Conte
Originally commissioned by maestro Neal Gittleman, A Copland Portrait was premiered by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra in January 2000. In March of 2015, First Lieutenant Ryan Nowlin's transcription of this work for band was premiered by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Jason Fettig. ECS Publishing is proud to offer both the band and the orchestra version. Conte on the creation of this overture: "I set out quite consciously to evoke various aspects of Copland's work by combining and recombining them within the terms of my own musical personality. For example, the first theme of A Copland Portrait combines the character of a theme from The Red Pony with the rhythmic texture of the scherzo of the Third Symphony. While composing the piece I was conscious of drawing inspiration from many of Copland's works; a melodic shape here, a harmonic gesture there, until I arrived at something that felt fresh and new to me. A Copland Portrait is cast in a traditional Sonata-Allegro form. After a vigorous, syncopated orchestral tutti, the first theme is announced in the solo oboe, accompanied by a steady eighth-note ostinato. Playful interjections are stated in the flute and bassoon. The syncopated tutti returns; the first theme is stated again, this time in the low winds. This theme builds to a colorful climax, leading into a more dissonant transition section, which gradually slows and gives way to a lilting, more lyrical second theme in the clarinet. After some modest development of the second theme, a more plaintive theme stated in the muted trumpet brings the exposition to a close. A scherzando development section follows; the first four notes of the first theme are inverted and subjected to various contrapuntal treatments. This development section ends with a return of the opening syncopated motive, leading into a recapitulation of the first theme, this time in canon, and the second theme and closing theme, broadly sung. A brilliant toccata-style coda brings A Copland Portrait to a brisk conclusion."
