Jacques Offenbachs operetta Voyage to the Moon tells the enchanting story of a prince that sets out on an adventure to travel to the moon. Premiered in Paris in October of 1875, the production was loosely based on the popular Jules Verne novel From the Earth to the Moon and spared no expense in making it a major theatrical event. This lively and exuberant overture contains various themes from the operetta including a beautifully lyric horn solo before concluding with a brilliant cancan-like presto that Offenbach is famous for. The musical flair and dance-like exuberance brilliantly reflect the grand spectacle of the stage presentation.

This arrangement of Randall Thompson's unaccompanied choral piece, The Best of Rooms, was transcribed by Barbara Lambrecht. As a student, Barbara fell in love with Thompson's music after hearing the Texas All State Choir sing his Testament of Freedom. Years later, as a school band director, she joined her church choir and "discovered" The Best of Rooms. Charmed not only by the music but also the text, she arranged this gem for wind band so that a new generation of musicians, in this case instrumentalists, could experience the genius of Randall Thompson. Two wind band versions are available: Version A opens with clarinet choir and oboe solo, while Version B opens with horn quartet. This "Grand Overture" was commissioned by the "Nagano Community Band" - Japan- on occasion of its jubilee in 1992 and is dedicated to the band's conductor, Ikuo Inagaki.The work is based upon three main themes, each symbolising a certain theme. The first part is characterized by its bright themes played mainly by the brass, accompanied by the woodwinds and festive percussion. This part symbolizes the jubilee which is the origin of the composition. This is followed by a bouncing allegro, in which each register of the band displays brilliant techniques. Especially the woodwinds come to the fore! This movement depicts the industriousness and enthousiasm shown by the members of the"Nagano Community Band" in the carrying out of their hobby. A third, main theme, is choral-like in character and is displayed both in the (soft) brass as well as in the warm medium register of the reeds. Here, nature's beaty in and around the city of Nagano is musically celebrated. Following a "chamber-music episode" (featuring the flute, oboe, clarinet, alto-saxophone and horn) the initial allegro re-occurs, weaving its way towards a grandiose finale, in which the two previous themes are once again apparent. Due to its very colourful scoring and the enormous diversity of musical thoughts and ideas, this composition is a fascinating and memorable piece, worthy a jubilee overture!

This miniature tone poem for concert band is a sequel of Benjamin Yeo's earlier work Flight. Voyage to the End of the Earth depicts a voyage by ship across the sea. The music expresses the calm of the sea before the ship sets sail towards the horizon. The ringing of the ship's bell and the blowing of the ship's horn signal the start of the journey. Now we hear the lyrical song of the sea, with lovely views of the ocean accompanied by whale song and seagull calls. Let yourself succumb to Mother Nature's beauty through this music! Percy Grainger's extraordinary scoring skills permeate this classic, carefree work for symphonic band. Children's March: Over the Hills and Far Away, originally a piano solo, was orchestrated by the composer while he was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Artillery Band. It includes two unusual scoring elements for the time - a prominent part for piano (cued in the winds), and brief four-part vocal interludes to be sung by members of the band (or a small chorus ad lib). Grainger believed that the greatest expressivity could be found in the lower instruments of the band (particularly the lower woodwinds), and Children's March includes a liberal and highly specialized use of the bassoons, English horn, bass clarinet and low saxophones. The march was first performed by the renowned Goldman Band in 1919, and was recorded in its original form by the same band with the composer conducting. (Full set includes a vocal score.)
