This delightful work was composed in April 2023 by Andrew Wainwright as a tribute to Catherine Ramsdale, who was a member of the composer's church in Lewisville, Texas, and who passed away at the age of 88. The music is supposed to be evocative of Catherine's loving and caring spirit. Starting out in rather melancholy mood to reflect the sadness that Catherine is no longer with us in an earthly sense, the music moves into a more sprightly section which reflects her cheerful and positive personality. 6-Note Reindeer is a festive piece designed for very young bands who have learned their first six notes and are familiar with eighth notes. Based on the well-known Christmas song Up on the Housetop, this arrangement helps introduce eighth-note rhythms in a fun and accessible way. The piece provides opportunities for every instrument to play the melody, except for oboe, tenor saxophone, and horn, due to range limitations at the beginning level. The snare drum part features various eighth-note patterns, adding rhythmic variety. A continuous sleigh bell part is also included, which can be shared by different players if needed. This piece is perfect for a beginner band performance, especially during the winter holidays.
