£57.50Hambone - Libby Larsen
Libby Larsen used three inspirations from her life to write Hambone. First, she was inspired by early rock 'n roll rhythms, particularly those written by Bo Diddley, from her high school days when she had her own rock band. The second inspiration is the African-American tradition of hamboning - clapping and slapping to create fun, new rhythms, and finally the melodies of the traditional cakewalk, reminiscent of Debussy's Golliwog's Cakewalk. The curriculum explores all three of these inspirations with various musical and visual examples, and explains African American oral traditions, linking this piece to places all over the world, from Ghana and the Ivory Coast to Paris, France. Claudio Monteverdi composed this toccata as an instrumental introduction for the opera L'Orfeo (1607). According to the composer, this introduction should be played three times before the rising of the curtain. This is actually the first overture in the history of opera.)The story of Orfeo, who enchanted nature with his music, is tragic, as he loses his beloved Eurydice and decides to retrieve her from the underworld. On their return journey, one glance back at her is fatal: he loses her for the second time.)This arrangement for wind band is very suitable as a concert opener. The toccata is played three times just like the original. The first time it is played by a quintetconsisting of two trumpets and three trombones.)Various ways of performing this toccata are possible. The tension builds up more intensely if the quintet starts off stage. Eventually, these five players join the band, after which the tutti version follows two times. You can also have the brass play from the gallery during the second or third time for a double choir effect.

This bittersweet song from 1967 is a real classic, partly due to the rendition by two queens of soul, Dionne Warwick and later also Aretha Franklin. The theme was very topical at the time: A woman is concerned about her husband fighting in the Vietnam War, and thinks about him during her day-to-day worries. Top arranger Peter Kleine Schaars created a tasteful and carefully orchestrated version. His arrangement stays true to the original colour and feel of the song, and, as a grade 3 piece, is still perfectly playable for most bands.

This work was inspired by the 3rd/4th century legend of Margaret of Antioch. Margaret was very devout, and lived as a shepherdess in the countryside. When the city prefect Olybrius proposed to her, on the condition that she would give up her faith, she refused and was eventually put to death. To evoke the archaic early-medieval atmosphere, Bert Appermont has used two Gregorian Kyries. In addition, influences from old music (such as old modes and parallel fifths) and Carl Orff's work are present. This four movement piece is an epic symphonic poem-like work with an incredible expressiveness and is ideal for a thematic concert or a contest.

"Red" is a powerful and energetic work for concert and festival performance. As the first movement from Krisanna's Colors, the suite is inspired by her color choices used to describe her daily emotions and moods. Beginning with somber clarinet solo and choir, the mood quickly changes to bombastic and extreme energy. You may consider programming "Red" (Mvt. 1) along with "Blue" (Mvt. 2) and "Yellow" (Mvt. 3) for even greater effect. An excellent choice for your concert/festival program!
