Grace Williams (1906 - 1977) from Barry, South Wales, was Wales finest composer. She studied composition at the Royal College of Music with Ralph Vaughan Williams and completed the Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes in 1940. The iconic Fantasia, - her most popular work, which brought her to prominence - is a composition for symphonic orchestra based on traditional Welsh nursery tunes and lullabies.It is a light-hearted musical journey through childhood in eight traditional tunes. The jubilant start to the work is echoed in the finale, with a calmer, but effectively scored middle section.The Fantasia was featured in the 2024 Last Night of the Proms. Nar himmelen faller ned (When the sky falls down) is the most famous song by Norwegian singer/songwriter Anne Grete Preus (1957-2019). It was released as single record in 1998 and included on the "Best of" collection "Mosaikk - 16 biter" later the same year. The song was also one of her very first hits as a solo artist. Her great career included many prestigious awards. Most notably are the "Spellemannsprisen" (the Norwegian Grammy) which she won several times. This arrangement was originally written for Preus herself as vocal soloist with Concert Band. In this reworked version, the vocal solo part can be omitted as the melody is spread out in the various band parts. Duration: 4.15

This bittersweet song from 1967 is a real classic, partly due to the rendition by two queens of soul, Dionne Warwick and later also Aretha Franklin. The theme was very topical at the time: A woman is concerned about her husband fighting in the Vietnam War, and thinks about him during her day-to-day worries. Top arranger Peter Kleine Schaars created a tasteful and carefully orchestrated version. This work was inspired by the 3rd/4th century legend of Margaret of Antioch. Margaret was very devout, and lived as a shepherdess in the countryside. When the city prefect Olybrius proposed to her, on the condition that she would give up her faith, she refused and was eventually put to death. To evoke the archaic early-medieval atmosphere, Bert Appermont has used two Gregorian Kyries. In addition, influences from old music (such as old modes and parallel fifths) and Carl Orff's work are present. This four movement piece is an epic symphonic poem-like work with an incredible expressiveness and is ideal for a thematic concert or a contest.Duration: 17.30
