FRENCH IMPRESSIONS (Concert Band) - Woolfenden, Guy

This work is inspired by four paintings by the French painter Georges Seurat, but does not attempt to recreate his pointillist technique in musical terms. The first movement, Parade, contrasts the strange gas-lit world of La Parade de Cirque: Invitation to the Sideshow, which features a sinister-looking trombone player and his ghostly acolytes, with the cool detached stance of that great masterpiece A Bathing Place: Asni?res. The second movement, Can Can, recreates the world of two other paintings: Le Cirque and Le Chahut, which depicts a curiously stylised Can Can in full swing, accompanied by a pit orchestra. The phrase "faire du chahut" means to make a racket!

GALLIMAUFRY (Concert Band) - Woolfenden, Guy

Gallimaufry (gali maw'fri): A medley; any confused jumble of things; but strictly speaking, a hotch potch made up of all the scraps of the larder. cf Shakespeare: The Winter's Tale: "a gallimaufry of gambols"I. Church and StateII. Inn and OutIII. Starts and FitsIV. Father and SonV. Advance and RetreatVI. Church and Status QuoGallimaufry was inspired by Shakespeare's Henry IV plays, and derives from music I composed for the Royal Shakespeare Company's production which opened the Barbican Theatre in 1982. The score is dedicated to Trevor Nunn, then Artistic Director of the RSC, with grateful thanks for his suggestion that I should expand and mould the music from these productions into a form suitable for concert performance. My thanks also to Timothy Reynish and the British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles who, with funds provided by North West Arts, commissioned the work and helped to ensure its first performance on September 24th 1983 with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra. The work is continuous and the thematic material of each of the six sections closely related. The "establishment" - leadership, temporal and ecclesiastical power - are depicted in the stately march which opens the work. (Church and State)The second section, Inn and Out, in an energetic hemiola rhythm, is concerned with the stews and low-life revels at the Boar's Head Tavern. This is interrupted and finally integrated with the Tavern Brawl and Gadshill Ambush of Starts and Fits. The mood changes and the ambivalence of Prince Hal's relationship with his father and surrogate father, Falstaff, is portrayed in a serene cor anglais solo. (Father and Son)Advance and Retreat is a recruiting march, derived from the Tavern Tune and leads into the last movement, Church and Status Quo, which deals with the rejection of Falstaff and the crowning of Price Hal. Order is restored with a majestic affirmation of the opening material.

ILLYRIAN DANCES (Concert Band) - Woolfenden, Guy

Includes:I. RondeauII. AubadeIII. GigueThis suite of three dances was commissioned by the British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles with funds provided by West Midlands Arts. The first performance took place on 26th September 1986 at Warwick University during the fifth annual BASBWE Conference. As with Gallimaufry, some of the thematic material is adapted from music originally written for productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company. The precise location of Illyria was not important to Shakespeare; what excited him was the resonance of the word itself and the romance of all far away, make believe places. Illyria is Never Never Land and the idea of inventing dances for such a place intrigued me.The opening Rondeau has a seven bar refrain with a rhythmic twist to it, which alternates with variants highlighting most sections of the orchestra. The Aubade is a gentle dance in ternary form featuring the flutes, with a hint of the dawn chorus at the close. The final Gigue is a rondo in six-eight time, with the recurring theme also appearing in counterpoint to the many subsidiary themes.Illyrian Dances is dedicated to my old and good friend Timothy Reynish.-GW

MOCKBEGGAR VARIATIONS (Concert Band) - Woolfenden, Guy

Includes: Prelude, Theme and Five VariationsUnlike my other pieces for concert band, Mockbeggar Variations has no roots in any of my work for the Royal Shakespeare Company, but resulted from a commission by Robert Roscoe for the Berkshire Youth Wind Orchestra, with funds provided by the Berkshire Young Musicians Trust. Robert, on learning that I was stuck for a suitable title, and noting my penchant for the unusual, suggested the address of the Trust - Mockbeggar House - might take my fancy. The Prelude hints at the melodic and harmonic material of the Theme, which appears in the thirty-first bar, distributed between various solo instruments and small groups of players. The five succeeding variations are contrasted in mood, tempo, style and instrumentation.A large part of the score was written in a chalet high in the Swiss Alps with a continual clangour of sixteen different pitches of cow bell constantly ringing in my ears. There is no Mahlerian hint of this in the music, nor was my wife, Jane, successful in shooing the cows away or muffling their bells.....! - GW

S.P.Q.R. (Concert Band) - Woolfenden, Guy

Includes:I. Fosse WayII. NotturnoIII. Via AppiaS. P. Q. R. was commissioned as part of the Warwickshire County Council centenary celebrations in 1988 and my response was to delve even further back than a mere one hundred years, to encompass the Roman occupation of Britain, which lasted 350 years from AD 43. The standard of the Roman legions often carried the letters S. P. Q. R: Senatus Populusque Romanus - The Senate and People of Rome.Among the lasting monuments to this long occupation is the amazing system of roads, one of which, the Fosse Way, bisects the county of Warwickshire from south-west to north-east. Four of the major areas of modern Warwickshire: Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick, Rugby, and Nuneaton and Bedworth, lie adjacent to this mighty thoroughfare.S. P. Q. R. attempts to juxtapose and contrast the ancient and indissoluble links between rural and urban Warwickshire and the might of ancient Rome. Thus the river Avon becomes a tributary of the Tiber and the Fosse Way joins the Via Appia: All roads lead to Rome!

The Pre-Goodman Rag (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Arnold, Malcolm - Woolfenden, Guy

Malcolm Arnold's Clarinet Concerto No. 2, Op. 115, was dedicated to Benny Goodman, and first performed by him as part of the Red Rocks Music Festival with the Denver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Priestman on 17 August 1974. The third movement, known affectionately as 'The Pre-Goodman Rag', is an outrageous ragtime parody with a hauntingly wistful middle section. The work has now been made more widely available in this transcription for wind band.Duration: 2:20Recorded on QPRM137D LINDA MERRICK - CLARINET (Royal Northern College of Wind Orchestra)

WHEN SANTA'S AWAY, THE ELVES WILL PLAY (Concert Band) - Conaway, Matt

Like any boss on a deadline, the big guy in red can be a harsh taskmaster, and the elves in his workshop have had enough. They work against a cynical soundtrack of jingling bells until "The Man" steps out, giving way to a raucous celebration (and their first break in weeks.) As abruptly as it begins, the party stops when the boss's whistle cuts through, and the grumbling elves return to their monotonous assembly of the year's toys. Great fun for beginning and developing bands!?
