Parts only. This work was commissioned by the Besses O' Th' Barn Band for soloist James Gourlay, with funds from the Musicians' Union. The melodic patterns of the concerto are based on traditional, often classical modes. A three-note motif forms the basis of the first and third movements whilst the second begins with a slower version of the main theme. Near the end there is an elaborate and technically demanding cadenza. The wind band orchestration is by James Gourlay. Via Crucis (commissioned by Dr.Mathew J. George and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble of the University of St.Thomas at St.Paul, Minnesota) was inspired by a work of the same name by Franz Liszt. It describes the journey of Christ carrying the Cross, and is divided into fourteen stages or 'stations'. The instrumentation is for Solo Cello and Concert Band. Grade 5/6.
