The "cat and mouse chase" has been a part of folklore and popular culture since the time of pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Over the ages, the chase has served as a metaphor for the suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted. In the modern age, the story has been played out hundreds of times in popular animated cartoons, often accompanied by a musical score representing the energetic spirit of the chase with lively twists and turns, sudden surprises and tongue-in-cheek music. Parts only. This work was commissioned by the Besses O' Th' Barn Band for soloist James Gourlay, with funds from the Musicians' Union. The melodic patterns of the concerto are based on traditional, often classical modes. A three-note motif forms the basis of the first and third movements whilst the second begins with a slower version of the main theme. Near the end there is an elaborate and technically demanding cadenza. The wind band orchestration is by James Gourlay. It describes the journey of Christ carrying the Cross, and is divided into fourteen stages or 'stations'. The instrumentation is for Solo Cello and Concert Band. Grade 5/6.
