The Overture is lively and bustling, the Serenade provides a calm central movement and the vivacious Finale has a slower middle section. Parts only. This work was commissioned by the Besses O' Th' Barn Band for soloist James Gourlay, with funds from the Musicians' Union. The melodic patterns of the concerto are based on traditional, often classical modes. A three-note motif forms the basis of the first and third movements whilst the second begins with a slower version of the main theme. Near the end there is an elaborate and technically demanding cadenza. The wind band orchestration is by James Gourlay.
