Based on the poems by German poet Carl Hauptmann (late Romanticism) and the English poet William Wordsworth (early Romanticism). Carl Hauptmann was in poor health as a child, but highly intelligent. He studied philosophy, psychology and biology. In the latter he was admitted to the degree of doctor. His marriage provided financial independence, so that he could focus on his studies. Hauptmann wrote various novels, plays, poetry and scientific works. Night Twilight floats above the valley's night mists are hanging, there's a whispering brook. Now the covering veil is lifting quite: come and look! See the magicland before our gaze: tall as dreams the silver mountains stand, crossed by silent silver paths shining from a secret land. Noble, pure, the dreaming country sleeps. By the path the shadow black and hogh of a beach. a wisp of a white smoke creeps to the dark'ning sky. Where the valley is the darkest hued countless little lights shine silently. O my soul! Drink of solitude! Carl Hauptmann Wordsworth 'introduced' a new type of poetry, based on the speech of the common man. This was his answer to the poetry of the classicism which was bound by rigid rules. His definition of poetry was: the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings from emotions recollected in tranquility. Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of "There is a land of pure delight" and is known as the "Father of English Hymnody". Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs, and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World, When I survey the wondrous cross, I sing the Mighty Power of God) "There is a Land of Pure Delight" is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription'). Here is used a traditional English melody ('Mendip'). There is a land of pure delight Wheresaints immortal Reign. Infinite day excludes the night, And pleasures banish pain ..

£186.20Wald Sinfonie - Kees Vlak
It was during his stay at Freiburg, Germany, where he was attending a Music Festival, that Kees Vlak found his inspiration for this romantic work. At this festival he was awarded a prize for one of his compostitions, which was played by several bands from different countries. The composer was staying in the small village of Horben, hidden among pine woods on a mountain at the border of the Black Forest. From the balcony of his room he had a splendid view on the Schawinsland Valley, scarcely hidden by the tops of the huge pines. Each morning a blackbird singin in a huge pine next to his window woke him up. This bird song opens the composition.Whenever possible the composer and his wife went for a walk in the Black Rorest. The rediscovery of this wonderful area is expressed by the steadily increasing number of tone colours, used in the orchestration. Each village still boasts its own folk music and dances. More than one hundred bands were playing all around; the Black Forest seemed to be the scene of one huge festival. The image of the Black Forest is also linked to that of hunting scenes, so the next theme is being introduced by hunting horn themes. The second theme paints the lake "Titisee". At first the lake is very calm, but a stiff breeze sets both water and music alike in motion. The small town of Titisee is very popular with tourists and is famous for its woodcutting, its clockworks and musical boxes. It is a popular folk tune, played by a musical box that makes the link with the next theme. The joy and cheerfulness of the dancing village people is expressed by a movement which works out the initial theme.On leaving the little town, one can hear once more the hunting music from the wood as well as the song of the birds. The new theme is againg closely linke d to the hunt and played by the typical German helicon-like euphoniums.this theme interacts with the wecond theme and the word ends with a grnd finale meant as a musical hommage tot this wonderful area.

Music makes friends' is the motto of the PURMERADE, the four-yearly international youth band festival, taking place again in 1994. The composition is based on seven variations on a German lovesong and is the test piece for the 1994 PURMERADE.The degree of difficulty has been adapted to the average level of the participating bands. Although some bands will have to make greater efforts, the work can be played by all bands. There are seperate instrumentations available for symphonic wind band, fanfare band and brassband.

The German composer Max Bruch was born in 1838 and died in 1920. Shortly after his arrival in Britain in 1880, where he had been appointed musical director of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society, he composed Kol Nidrei. This work was written for the Jewish community of Liverpool. Next to the Violin Concerto Nr.1, Kol Nidrei is Bruch's most popular and most often performed composition. It is based on an old Hebraic tune sung on the Great Reconciliation Day and was originally composed for cello and orchestra. This arrangement is a free adaptation for wind band.

Manfred Schneider (1953), is since 1972 a member of the German Military Band Heeresmusikkorps 300) based at Koblenz. After his overture 'Upside Down' and the rhythmical study 'Rock and Go' Molenaar Edition now publishes this lyrical 'Song of Freedom'. A nice slow tune turns into a very rhythmical intermezzo, but soon returns to its original slow but compelling character. You can hardly refrain from joining in.

The pianist and composer Enrique Granados y Campina (Lrida 1867) studied composition with Pedrell in Barcelona. He went to Paris in 1887 to study the piano with de Beriot. In 1901 he founded his own piano school in Barcelona. Granados and his wife died on their way back from America when the passenger ship 'Sussex' was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Channel on 24 March 1916. As a composer he became the founder of the specific Spanish national music. He was most of all inspired by the Spanish capital and more precisely by the Madrid of Francisco Goya. In 1911 he composed two piano albums 'Goyescas', inspired by paintings and tapestries of the painter Francisco Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), famous for his brillant originality and bizarre imagination. Later on he developed this music into an opera, based on a libretto by Fernando Periquet.
