The Last Rose of Summer is a popular Irish folksong. The original text was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) and the melody is a traditional air titled The Groves of Blarney. The German composer Friedrich von Flotow (1812-1883) cleverly used this song in his opera Martha, a light-hearted, successful work that is still regularly performed. The melancholy character of The Last Rose of Summer still appeals to many people in the present day and this arrangement by Wil van der Beek certainly does justice to the beauty of the melody. A wonderful item to change the mood of any performance.

The German composer Joseph Ignaz Schnabel (1767-1831) was a descendant of a musical family. During his lifetime he occupied several musical posts including Violinist, Organist, Concertmaster, Conductor, Music Teacher and managing director of the Royal Institute for Church Music. Schnabel composed masses, hymns, vespers, military music and a clarinet concerto. His choir work Transeamus usque Bethlehem is still widely performed and Wil van der Beek has produced this excellent arrangement for concert band which does justice to the original.

O Heiland, rei die Himmel auf (O Savior, Rend the Heavens Wide) was written by the German poet Friedrich von Spee (1591-1635) during the Thirty Years? War. The profound text echoes the misery of that time, but at the same time reflects hope of comfort and redemption. This well-known Advent song is sung in the Catholic as well as the Protestant Church. Jacob de Haan has used the beautiful melody for this arrangement for concert band.

This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen is of the well-known German chorale Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, taken from the oratorio Paulus (St. Paul) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847). Although accredited to Mendelssohn it is thought the melody was in fact written by the pastor and poet Philipp Nicolai in 1599. Robert van Beringen's arrangement perfectly captures the biblical story of St. Paul.

Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Hh' sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director's discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

Based on the poems by German poet Carl Hauptmann (late Romanticism) and the English poet William Wordsworth (early Romanticism). Carl Hauptmann was in poor health as a child, but highly intelligent. He studied philosophy, psychology and biology. In the latter he was admitted to the degree of doctor. His marriage provided financial independence, so that he could focus on his studies. Hauptmann wrote various novels, plays, poetry and scientific works. Night Twilight floats above the valley's night mists are hanging, there's a whispering brook. Now the covering veil is lifting quite: come and look! See the magicland before our gaze: tall as dreams the silver mountains stand, crossed by silent silver paths shining from a secret land. Noble, pure, the dreaming country sleeps. By the path the shadow black and hogh of a beach. a wisp of a white smoke creeps to the dark'ning sky. Where the valley is the darkest hued countless little lights shine silently. O my soul! Drink of solitude! Carl Hauptmann Wordsworth 'introduced' a new type of poetry, based on the speech of the common man. This was his answer to the poetry of the classicism which was bound by rigid rules. His definition of poetry was: the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings from emotions recollected in tranquility. My heart leaps up when I behold a rainbow in the sky My heart leaps up when I behold A rainbow in the sky: So was it when my life began. So is it now I am a man. Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of "There is a land of pure delight" and is known as the "Father of English Hymnody". Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs, and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World, When I survey the wondrous cross, I sing the Mighty Power of God) "There is a Land of Pure Delight" is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription'). Here is used a traditional English melody ('Mendip'). There is a land of pure delight Wheresaints immortal Reign. Infinite day excludes the night, And pleasures banish pain ..
