Extra score only. The Scottish Dance Suite is based on traditional Scottish folk songs and dances, though several less well-known tunes are used. For instance in the second of the four movements, one can hear the older tune of The bonnie Earl of Moray, and in the first movement, the tune is the one to which Burns wrote his famous poem Robin shure in hairst. In the last movement, two well-known tunes alternate, but at the end several of the tunes used in the work all combine together to make an exciting climax. Duration: 8mins.

The men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Force are the inspiration behind this original composition by Vince Gassi. The first work in his Armed Forces Suite, it takes off with a bright, spirited theme first heard in the flutes. The rest of the ensemble soon joins in the maneuvers and offers a fuller tactical report. Clarinets take over with dignity, providing a lyrical contrast, and are supported by a stately accompaniment. It isn't long before we start to feel the "spirit of adventure" building to a contrasting section conveying images of stealth and intrigue. Covert operations lead finally to a restatement of the opening theme by the brass with flute and clarinet obligato. These three separate compositions have been adapted into one suite. The first movement, Behold, the Tabernacle of God, is to be performed with the trumpets and trombones placed in the rear or balcony of the concert hall. The effect is to surround the audience with antiphonal sound, thereby, in effect, placing them in the tabernacle of God. The arrangement is adapted from the original scoring for orchestra and chorus. The choral parts are played by the trumpets and trombones.The second movement, Go forth into the world in peace, is scored for woodwinds, horns, euphonium, tuba, and string bass, in keeping with the original scoring for chorus with strings alone. For the third movement, O be joyful in the Lord, the conductor may determine the placement of the trumpets and trombones, either leaving them in the antiphonal setting, or returning them to the stage.

The original concept for this work was a suite of short movements, each with its own character, but by the time the first movement was complete it was clear that a conventional three-movement format was going to work out better. The opening movement contains much syncopation and is almost rag-like in style. The slower second movement explores the unsurpassable ability of the euphonium to play lyrically, with a theme that is later taken up by the band whilst the soloist weaves a filigree descant. This leads straight into the third movement, which is almost bebop in style and shows off the jazzier capabilities of the euphonium. The concerto was composed for the virtuoso soloist, Steven Mead. Maxime Aulio composed Les Voyages de Gulliver (Gulliver's Travels) for the concert band of the Conservatoire National de R?gion in Toulouse (France) conducted by Jean-Guy Olive. The first performance took place in Toulouse (Auditorium Saint-Pierre des Cuisines) on April 25, 2001. The Anglo-Irish author Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) took about six years to complete his epic tale of adventure. The creative storyline, clear writing and subtlety of Gulliver's Travels have been engaging readers for generations. This literary travel between reason and foolishness was Maxime Aulio's inspiration for this piece. Each of the four movements of this suite is a review of Gulliver's adventures, resembling the effect of a kaleidoscope, which juxtaposes small fragments of colour in a linear pattern. 0:19:00

The TV Detectives brings together five of Nigel Hess's best-known television themes (Dangerfield, Campion, Wycliffe, Maigret and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates), all originally written for small-screen sleuths in whodunits that have been enjoyed by TV audiences worldwide.Dangerfield is a BBC series about a Warwickshire police surgeon, and originally starred Nigel le Vaillant, before Nigel Havers took over the lead role. Campion, also from the BBC, was based on Margery Allingham's stories of a mild-mannered 1920s gentleman detective, played by Peter Davison. Wycliffe was a long-running HTV series set in Cornwall and starred Jack Shepherd as a somewhat dour and low-key DCI - but, of course, he always solved the case! Michael Gambon starred in Granada TV's latest incarnation of the famous French detective Maigret, while Patricia Routledge played the OAP sleuth to perfection in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, another popular BBC series. William Alwyn (1905-1985) studied at the Royal Academy of Music where, at the age of 21, he was appointed Professor of Composition - a position he held for nearly thirty years. Apart from his vast output of serious music he contributed nearly 200 scores for the cinema. Starting, mainly with documentaries he wrote his first full feature-length score in 1941.In Search of the Castaways (1962) was his third score for the Walt Disney Company, and starred Hayley Mills and Maurice Chevalier.
